American Express - Travel Credit Mistakes

Recently upgraded to AMEX Qantas Ultimate from their basic card range and part of the promotion/upgrade bonus was points and travel credit.

Now received an email from AMEX that they published incorrect information regarding travel credits, extracted below:

"Dear XXXX,

Thank you for your recent upgrade to the American Express Qantas Ultimate Card. We hope that you are enjoying your new Card.

We are writing to let you know that the email invite we sent you to upgrade to the American Express® Qantas Ultimate Card contained incorrect information. In this email, we incorrectly stated that the Annual $450 Qantas Travel Credit1 can be used on flights, hotels experiences and more at Amex Travel Online.

The correct information is that the $450 Qantas Travel Credit1 can be used towards international or domestic Qantas flight booked online at American Express Travel each anniversary year."

So they are limiting the use of credit to be exclusively on Qantas flights now…..

I wonder if anyone has spoken to AMEX about this error regarding the usage of credit because it could be viewed as false advertising when people signed up at the beginning?

Thanks for contacting OzAmex hotline, please hold the line for a customer rep.

Cancel the card and ask for a full refund?

    • This. You’re well within your rights to do so as Amex has breached the agreement in this case. In fact, you could even seek compensation though I’m terrible about making these kinds of demands. There are plenty of people who do though (I’m looking at you DrRalph!).

Qantas card travel credit was always limited to Qantas flights though.

    Always been the case…

  • There's another AMEX card (Explorer) which is $400 towards travel (any airline, hotels included). But you've applied for the Qantas card which is only Qantas flights and always has been. You should ask to be switched to the Explorer and for the $50 back and you'll have what you wanted but $50 cheaper each year

    • Explorer gets Amex rewards pts whereas Qantas card lets you get QFF pts. Diff rewards systems.

  • Definitely false advertising. Especially if you signed up using the upgrade link, as that's the information you were provided.

Obviously hit amex up for a question and see what they can come with re:solution.

While it's true the 450 is only for Qantas purchases, op received wrong information during his application.

    • will contact them and see what they say.

I too expected it a false advertising at the start so I'm thinking what are the possible outcomes: (1) Some sort of additional complimentary credit to the card, (2) Like Poppin said below, revert the account and claw back pts and fees etc., (3) Trending on twitter #AmexFalseAdvertising

I would expect the terms and conditions accepted during sign up trumps the email. I imagine they will let you cancel or downgrade the card with a full refund, but they may claw back the bonus points.

    • Called up Amex and they offered a goodwill credit to the account.

In a world we cant promise that we can board any flights due to viruses, i'd prefer that I could use the Travel Credit on hotels and experience…
