PS5 and Internet Connectivity

Hi All,

I notice since i got my PS5 that my home internet slowed down. While like the majority of us, I work from home and I notice while i am working on my laptop and my kids use the PS5 for just streaming through Netflix or Disney, my internet connection will starts to disconnect and slow down to 1 or 2 Mbps.

This didn't make sense to me at first as i usually have 100 Mbps speed.

I called Optus to troubleshoot and the technician asked me some question like how many devices connected to the router which i told him around 7 then he asked me, do you have a PS5 which shocked me.

I answered yes where he told me, we getting a lot of complaints from PS5 owners having slow internet during the use of the PS5 in general.

He asked me to test it by disconnecting the PS5 from the network and check if the problem still occur. After doing that my network restored perfectly and no disconnection at all!!

He suggested that I might need to look for other modems options but they can't recommend any.

I start searching on the net and found some people were experiencing the same issue and some resolved it by buying a better modem like the Netgear Nighthawk.

Anyone had similar experience? Why does the PS5 causing this issue?

you need Quality of Service (QoS) feature. some routers have this feature.
It will allow you to configure the router to prioritize your traffic over the ps5

    • Exactly this or go 250 or 1000Mbps if you can get it. Depending on budget, but if you're prepared to spend on a nighthawk get a ubiquiti udm

      • 250 or 1000 Mbps, what you mean sir?

Your NBN speed. NBN250 or NBN1000 if you have HFC or FTTP

        • 250 above my budget.

Do you think getting a nighthawk will fix the issue?

            @Abdull: Get yourself an Asus

Asus make great computers and associated parts and feed the R&D into the modems and routers.

IMHO Asus are the best in the market

            Netgear don't make computers.

    • Thank you, let me give it a try and check if the Optus router they provided has that feature.

That's your problem. The Optus router.

        All ISP routers are rubbish

Midrange Asus RT ax3000 will be more than sufficient for your uses

I have deco M5 mesh, no issues with the ps5.

  • Thanks all

  • I have a PS5 connected via Ethernet to an ASUS RT-AC68U router on HFC 100 Mbps and have not had an issues with speeds on any devices.

      • No idea. Head to the forums or whirlpool forums. The ASUS above was recommended at the time. In fact I have two of them, the second as an AP. The AIMesh didn’t work very well for me.

        • Thanks mate
