PlayStation Purchase HELP?

Hi, find myself in a situation.
My Sons PS4 has crapped itself and i need another console.

Have been waiting for PS5 supply anyway.
Options are PS5 for $1k from one of the places on Google (assume no Warranty ftom Sony)?

Or used PS4 from EB games etc for $400, warranty from EB?

In the big scheme i auppode i may get $200 for the PS4 when the 5 becomes availble for walk ins.

Thanks

Don't buy a PS5 unless it's from a retail store with appropriate warranty. Do not give in to scalpers and scammers.

Stock is released on occasion but they get snapped up quck and shortages will continue for a while yet.

Depending on what he plays, a PS4 Pro may be suitable enough.

    Yeah don't give into scalpers.

I guess technically another option is to pay EB Games to repair it, for ~$150 and get 3 months warranty? While you wait for the PS5 to come out.

Though you may find an old one on Facebook Marketplace/Gumtree for around there?

    • My other technically not inclined Son had a crack at a home repair. So i think its a lost csuse.

I did come across just now someone on Facebook who has a few PS5's for sale New in Box with receipt for $800.

Anything i should watch out for?

      Thanks

If it's not a scam or stolen, it might be a banned PS5 that cannot go online or have some hardware issues or controller drift or snapped R2 spring or any myriad of problems. Really really don't recommend buying off others.

      • Don't do it most are fake pictures/profiles and they refer to you some website to buy online, also if you see them an extra controller and game for $800 it is obviously a scam

They'll say they're really far but they'll ship it out to you. Maybe just wait for EB, I live in metro Melbourne and out of curiosity, I ask about ps5 stock everytime I go in. They've always taken pre-orders with ETA 2-3 weeks.

      • If you've got mutual friends, it's probably OK. You will get them for a good 200 odd cheaper on FB/Gumtree though, the box is huge and over 5kg so postage would be easily close to $100 express not to mention eBay taking 10-15% off the final price (that includes shipping). If they are selling them for 800, they probably have/had them on eBay for ~1000 (i'm going to assume they are digital?) and would only be getting about 750-800 after ebay+postage.

If you are considering buying a preowned console from eb for that price you may as well buy the PS5 from a scalper. EBGames are scalping at that price for a used ps4, I wouldn't pay more than $200 for a used ps4 and you will find alot of people will sell there's with games for a max of $250 on gumtree or marketplace.

Best off waiting for a PS5 if you can, follow the twitter dude stock is available fortnightly now or your local jb has stock you just need to put your name down. I recommend calling every jb around you to find the shortest list.

But if you're desperate and can't wait just pay the extra $150/200 to buy off someone who is selling one and just get their original purchase receipt. Alot of people hate scalpers but if you need something now then you pay a premium if supply is low, just like anything in life.

I managed to get one a month or two back. Here's what I did.

    1. Create a Twitter account.
    2. Follow Aus PS5 stock accounts. (can't remember exact name, but Google it.
    3. Create accounts with JB, Big W EB games etc. Log in to all of them and prefill as much as possible.
    4. Turn on twitter notifications and keep your device on you.
    5. As soon as an alert arrives, click it, add to cart and try to check out as fast as possible.

I was able to get a PS5 after about two weeks of trying this method. I probably failed 4 or 5 times.

Don't give money to scalpers. Ever. For anything.

    • This is a great idea. Could also call local JB stores and ask to be placed on their waiting listing.

    Have you considered Cash Converters?
There are PS4's between $160-$250 for the PS4 and between $300-380 for the PS4 PRO.

    https://www.cashconverters.com.au/search-results?Sort=defaul…

    • IMO don't give money to cash converters, I worked for them a while back, they are just scum that take advantage of both the people selling their stuff in a tough spot and those looking for a 'bargain' and yet are nearly always charging more than what it is on a marketplace.

If you do go the cashies route, look at the number on the price tag and then ask them about anything new that has come in. Check the number on that - if there's a large difference between the number on the playstation and the new item, then it's been sitting there for a while and you're more likely to be able to widdle them down a bit at least.

Marketplace would be where i'd look. Don't pay more than 200 for a slim or more than 400 for a pro.

I recently lucked out with getting a ps5 due to stock from NSW/Melb coming to SEQLD stores (JB HI FI) - I asked them what the future looked like for stock, and they said it was still really bleak and to not hold your breath for reliable stock until at least the second half of 2022. If you are going to get one from someone selling theirs, either new or used, I would probably buy now, as they do look to be the cheapest they've been for a while. You can find the disc versions for around 1k on gumtree/fb market place and around 1100 on eBay (the lowest average was around 1200-1300 a few weeks ago when I was being tempted by the devil). If you have some mutual friends with a seller on FB, i'd probably go with them, but other than that, i'd probably stick with eBay, as atleast they have the escrow function and you have some kind of buyer protection there, not to mention the knowledge that eBay will be taking 10-15% of what you pay so it's not all going to a scalper (i'm sure they love that?). Don't let them talk you into bypassing eBay either.

The last PS5 EB preorder my brother in law got his in two days just by putting down a $200 deposit

    • where they in QLD by any chance?

      • Capalaba

        • Yeah that makes sense - if the OP is in SEQLD i'd definitely pop my name on a list/preorder, we are getting all of the NSW/Melb stock atm. I even managed to find, by some miracle of god, a JB Hi Fi with stock in store. They were like dealing with the secret service to get it though hah. Wanted to check my number, name, etc before purchasing and refused to hold it while I drove there.

  • If you're with Vodafone, you can add a ps5 on your bill

Geez ps4 prices have gone up a bit, I remember looking at selling mine around 6 months ago and they were around $250-$300 for the pro. Here's one from Cash Converters If you're paying more than $400 for a pro or ps4, I'd just wait to get a ps5. Your son will live. Don't buy from scalpers.
