First hit on Google result for "the sims 1 free to play" yields a download page

Would you rather do it that way (abandonware, sketchy legalities), or wait till EA make it free to play…? Either way, zero money is going back to EA (thank god)

    • Didn't see that abandonware. Will give it a try

  • Copyright lasts life + 70 years in the US or 70-120 years from publication, Australia is about the same…

So you've got a bit more waiting to do.

    • What is life?

Like life of the company that created it or the developers?

      Then add 70 years?

The Sims 1 was released in 2000 so does that mean copyright will expire in 2071 or longer?

      • What is life?

Depends on the kind of work, if its a book then the life of the author. If its a collaborative work like a game would be for example, then its x years from publication. In America its 95 - 120 years from first publication/creation.

        • The Sims 1 as an example was released in 2000 as a game as a collaborative work would have copyright expire in 2095 + 70 = 2165 or 2120 + 70 = 2190

So The Sims 1 Copyright expires in the year 2165 or 2190

          Is that right?

          • @AlienC: In America it is 95 years from publication, or 120 years from creation, whichever is shorter.

So, for example if something was published in the year 2000 its copyright could be until 2095.
However, if that thing was created in 1900 but first published in 2000, it would be until 2020.

There are a lot of nuances around when something is created or published too. But as a rule of thumb, it's probably not going to be out of copyright in our life time.
