Can I Use Coles Giftcard to Buy Nintendo Gift Card

The kids got some Coles gift cards and they wanted to use them to buy Nintendo egift cards. I'm not sure that will work though, and I don't want them to get stuck at the checkout feeling awkward.

Does anyone know if you can do this?
(I will just buy them off them if not but but they want to do it themselves)

    No

Coles Gift Cards are not redeemable on Coles Online or at Coles Express or Liquorland. Not redeemable for cash or payments of credit or store accounts. Gift Cards cannot be used to purchase Gift Cards. This card will expire 4 years from the date of issue. Treat this card like cash. Lost or stolen cards will not be replaced or refunded.

    • Thanks. I'd seen that but I didn't think it was clear if this referred to just the gift cards for Coles, or the giftscards for other outlets.

"Coles Gift Cards" would seem to me to be the ones for Coles. The same conditions aren't written under the "retailer cards"

Give them cash, spend GC on groceries. Easy!

    • Yep. That's what I said but they want to do their own thing.

I have used coles giftcard to purchase other giftcards at coles(never nintendo though but cant imagine why it would be any different). This can be done at the self checkout as well if your coles giftcard covers the whole value of the nintendo cards i.e. no split payment. If u wish to split payment then manned checkout is the only way. Hope this helps.

    • Yes, I have used them also at the self check out.

The answer to your question actually depends on the type of Coles gift cards they have. The answer is so nuanced that it will be easier to provide an answer if you are able to give more details on the type of gift cards in question.

    • Are the gift cards physical (plastic) or digital?

    • Which of the following gift cards are they? There are four different groups of gift cards issued by Coles Group Ltd that can be used as a payment method at Coles supermarkets, but only some are known to be allowed in some scenarios as a payment method when purchasing Nintendo gift card.

    Gift Card Gift Card Prefix1
    Coles Gift Card 6273 4010, 6273 4012
    Coles Group & Myer Gift Card 6273 3500, 6273 3538
Coles Plus Gift Card 6277 9400, (other prefixes exist)
    Coles Groceries & Returns Gift Card 6273 4000, 6273 4005

    1. The gift card prefix refers to the first eight numbers of the gift card number, and it identifies the type of gift card you have.

    • They are digital (printed out so I assume digitial)

      6273 4010

      so Coles Gift Card

      • No…DM me if you have questions.

It may work, depending on whether you (actually, your kids) go to:

        • a self-service checkout, or

        • a serviced checkout (i.e. the checkouts where a dedicated staff member bags your groceries for you or the service desk where the cigarettes are sold).

        Self-service checkouts

        • As mentioned before, you cannot use multiple payment methods at a self-service checkout at Coles when purchasing a third-party1 gift card (e.g. credit/debit card + cash, credit/debit card + gift card, multiple credit/debit cards). It is a limitation built into the checkout system, and store staff have no way of overriding this limitation at these checkouts. If you press Mixed Payment on the payment screen, the checkout system will display an error message.

        • Some (not all) self-service checkouts have been set up so that if you only purchase a third-party gift card and nothing else in the transaction, pressing Gift Card on the payment screen will cause it to display an error message saying “Gift Cards cannot be used to pay for Gift Cards”, and staff cannot (or will not) help you get around this issue. This has happened to me twice (once with a Telstra SIM card pack, once with a Google Play gift card), but other OzBargainers have not encountered this issue.

        • If you buy a third-party gift card with one or more grocery items (e.g. a mango) in the same transaction, pressing Gift Card on the payment screen may not cause an error message to display.

        Serviced checkouts

        • As mentioned before, you can use multiple payment methods at a serviced checkout at Coles when purchasing a third-party gift card. You can use one or multiple Coles Gift Cards, along with multiple credit/debit cards (if required).

        • Keep in mind that staff at the serviced checkout have the right to stop you from using a Coles Gift Card as a payment method, because that is in the Coles Gift Card terms and conditions. In my experience, I have never been stopped, but some other OzBargainers have not been so lucky.

        Hopefully this helps!

        1. A third-party gift card is a gift card not issued by Coles Group Ltd (e.g. Nintendo gift card, JB Hi-Fi gift card, Coles Gift Mastercard).

        • Thanks so much.

I'll let them try and give them the cash as a backup. They won them so they are pretty proud of themselves and want to be independent about it all.

          • @pete123: No worries!

I’m sorry I cannot give a succinct answer, but I guess you can see why…

  • a mango

    Why a mango ?

    • They've just come into season. Why wouldn't you want a mango?

      • Why wouldn't you want a mango?

        Too expensive…

    SUCCESS!

They went through the self service, had the exact amount for the Nintendo cards. No problems at all.

    Thanks, everyone!

    • Well done
