Is It Legal to Install Sonoff Mini 2-Way Smart Switches?

The smart switches are getting much smaller these days. This mini switch from Sonoff (on ebay) can effectively be inserted into any switch.

Questions:
(1) Is it legal to be installed in Australia?
(2) If it's legal, does it need to be installed by a certified electrician?

Thanks!

  • Possibly, but not by you. You would need a licensed electrician and the product would need to have some sort of Australian standard compliance (c-tick or RCM??)

  • This is an interesting product. It's nifty as the switch will still work even if this stops working but it looks like you have to take the switch plate off every time you need to reset it or pair it which makes it less than ideal. But price point is much better than getting a smart switch so what do I know >|<

    1. Not certified for Australia and a legit licensed electrician will most likely refuse to install.
    2. Not applicable due to Above. If you are after something that provides the same functionality and is certified look at Shelly, Aeotec and Fibaro modules. However these are few times more expensive than the Sonoff.

The first and third photos are somewhat misleading. The round mounting box and the mini switch has nothing to do with Australia. These are standard electrical switch gear used in EU and are incompatible with Australian switches and mounting boxes.

    • Thanks for the info. I have actually bought one to try out with a simple table lamp, not installed as suggested as I didn't think it was approved in Australia. It worked as described though.

These would be a bit of a pain in the arse to install, it's not as simple as just swapping your current manual switches with these…

These need to be powered, (active & neutral), generally light switches only have a two core switch wire run down to them from the light fitting, active and the switch wire, so you'd also need to run a separate power cable to them…

(Personally I wouldn't install cheap dodgy non-compliant/non-approved electronics in my walls)

A product that fills a similar role and does have RCM certification for use in Australia is the Shelly 2.5. These still need to be installed by a qualified electrician; it's not legal to do any DIY electrical work in Australia.

I bought mine from OzSmartThings. Ozbargain product page: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/shelly-2-5
