POE (Power Over Ethernet) is a technology that uses 2 pairs of the network cable (eg. cat5e or cat6) for power and 2 pairs for data, so need all 4 pairs connected. Anything later than cat5e will work for POE if you buy them from retail store. So you can use cat 6 for POE devices.

  • PoE is just Power over Ethernet which just essentially means power is being delivered through the copper ethernet cable in tandem with data transmission.

Any Cat5e or Cat6 cable upto 100m long will work.

  • Thanks for advice, might check ebay for cat 6 type cable

    • Just remember, to buy 100 meters of cat 6 cable is $45-55 from ebay delivered. You can even buy a cat6 100m cable "kit" with crimper, testing kit for a DIY (youtube how to crimp - it's straight forward).

Don't get ripped by super expensive cables.

      • DIY isn't good advice for someone who isn't familiar with networking.

        Especially when dealing with PoE

        • Why esp with poe?

@BanannaMan: Because you're no longer simply dealing with signal voltages - if you mix them up the connected devices simply get confused and won't talk.

PoE - the 'power' part - has a significant jump in both voltage and available current. If you mix them up or short something out you'll likely release the magic smoke from your devices, or a long trail of melted plastic, or both.

Not worth the risk for someone without experience.

@Switchblade88: I always assumed everyone tested their crimps after terminating. Suppose they comes back to, when you ASSUME you make an ASS out of U and ME.

              Point taken.

People often have issues with the cheap "copper clad aluminium" (CCA) core cable when used for POE, it seems best to stick with pure copper core cables…

Google CCA POE and you'll find plenty of info, like:
    https://www.showmecables.com/blog/post/copper-clad-aluminum-…
    https://icc.com/white-papers/look-inside-copper-clad-aluminu…

Most of the cheap rolls of cat5/6 cable on ebay these days seem to be CCA…

If you avoid the real cheap cables, and anything marked CCA or CCE you should be fine…

Edit: also avoid any multi strand cables, they tend to be crap, stick to solid core…

I bought this from Amazon : Monoprice Cat5e Ethernet Bulk Cable - Network Internet Cord - Solid, 350Mhz, UTP, CMR, Riser Rated, Pure Bare Copper Wire, 24AWG, 250ft

No issues with my reolink peo cameras running off about 20m each.
