ALDI Supermarkets = Overpriced Rubbish

Everyone always says how awesome ALDI is because of "special buys" and cheap prices, but it's all junk and low quality. Also their prices are not cheaper.

  • I wouldn’t go as far as saying they sell overpriced garbage, just gotta be conscious of what/when/where you’re buying. Also, can you be arsed waiting in line at Aldi? I can’t.

I've always found it fascinating that people are "SHOP AUSTRALIAN!" and then "ALDI IS THE BEST!"

Quite frankly, I hate Aldi. Half assed rip offs of known brands. Each to their own though, and more power to you.

    • A lot of their goods are Australian made - no better or worse than Colesworth

      • That's true, but the profits go overseas unlike Coles/Woolies.

        • So what? Why shouldn't they?

It's called inward foreign investment. What's wrong with that?

          • @R4: I didn't say there was anything wrong with it.

You said Aldi is "no better or worse than Colesworth" from the perspective of shopping Australian. I just pointed out that it is in fact worse from the perspective that it's a foreign company whose profits go overseas, unlike Coles/Woolies, whose profits stay in Australia.

free range eggs are much cheaper, $3.99 vs $4.50 at coles iirc
frozen berries are also much cheaper

I go to Aldi solely for their VBee & Boronas

Food at Aldi is cheaper and adequate quality
if they did delivery or click and collect i'd never buy produce from colesworths ever again.

When I want quality produce I go to a local market or organic store, for everything else I want a lower total spend.

No kidding I went to coles and got ingredients for a pretty normal lasagne.. 65 (profanity) bucks
that's no premium products just the coles brand pasta sheets base mince onion tomato etc…

  • I avoid Aldi because I just can't stand the checkout experience.

  • I shop at Aldi on rare occasions but really I only find them a few cents cheaper than homebrands. Mostly shop at Coles & Woolies depending on needs and buy veggies at green grocer. Little Ones nappies & wipes is what takes me to Woolies and I end up shopping there when I am close to running out. I have 2 Coles and 2 Aldi closer than Woolies.

I have heard from someone who works at one of the largest fresh produce marketing/distribution company that Coles & Woolies have first dibs with their products.
Whatever they reject go to Aldi and maybe IGA and the likes. Then finally what they reject make it to places like Melbourne Market which is where the wholesalers to the green grocers get their fruits & veg.

I can only give strawberry & banana as example as they are the only fruits my kids eat. Coles & Woolies stay fresh longer than Aldi or green grocer

I disagree as my experience has been pretty good:
. Bought a coffee table there last year and it is one of the best coffee table I have purchased for the price. It looks great, functional and big enough for my family.
. I still own and use the frying pans that I bought from Aldi 3 years ago and they are still in great condition.
. Bought a $200 Nokia phone for my mum. It wasn't a good phone but she had been using it for nearly 2 years till it became too slow to use. I then returned it to the shop and got full refund.
. Bought a couple of down jackets and they have been very warm, pretty much on par with Macpac. They don't look as good though.
. Only one bad experience I had was trying to return a faulty air mattress. The thing stopped working after may be 5 usages. Apparently Kmart sell the same brand and they offer warranty for it but Aldi do not.

Btw, imo, Aldi's lactose free milk, fruit yogurt and hommus are cheaper and taste much better than the ones selling at Colesworth. I'm also a fan of their ice cream.

    • Apparently Kmart sell the same brand and they offer warranty for it but Aldi do not .

Don't you know simple Aust Consumer laws that they have to refund it . Store is breaking that law by making their own rules if they don't abide by it .

Ill give my 250c on this.

ALDI 4 pack brioche burger buns $2.50 and are great quality.

Coles 4 pack brioche buns $2.70 and shit.

Woolworths 4 pack brioche buns $5 and even worse.

Yep, Aldi Brioche buns rock. My local store always sells out of them so sometimes can't get them.

Bought an aldi fridge a year back, happened to be the perfect fit for a French door after we couldn't find anything else that fitted. Stirling branded? Seems to be just a cheap rebrand but hey, it works.

  • I go to Coles and Aldi once a week. Usually spend on average ~$150 at Coles, and ~$50 at Aldi for things like cooking oil / pork loin / nuts / bacon / frankfurts / raw chicken / cheese / brioche buns / laundry detergent.

There is a really good butcher not too far from me but parking is really difficult and it's in the opposite direction of our local shopping centre so I can't be bothered and just get lamb/beef from Coles.

  • You can save $5k a year easy from avoiding colesworth for meat and vegies! But you got to live in non white areas, no chance otherwise. I'm talking $2 large pizzas cheap.

I find many of the products are better quality than Coles/Woolies and a full shop comes out significantly cheaper. I guess OP must be buying different groceries to me to find otherwise.

  • I was planning to purchase a dishwasher and a freezer which were on special buys recently, but I found that for NSW it's not available in-store and was only online, and I had to pay $49 for shipping which doesn't make sense and will end up paying same with other brands. I tried to contact them but there is no way to reach them out.

I've found some things are cheap, some aren't. It's the usual story of having a handful of loss leaders to get people in the door, and then you make the money back elsewhere.

My biggest complaint is about 2/3rds the time I think "I know, I'll give Aldi a go for my weekly shop!" I end up going to colesworths after to buy the handful of things Aldi just didn't have.

I never like Aldi products. They tastes not as good. Several examples are milk, butter, kombucha, chips, vanilla extracts, etc… So I did give them a try on several occasions. But their products just never meet my expectations. They are not that cheap anyway.

only few things is a bargain ….i think i get better deal to buy stuff while Woolworth or coles on sale

i also found the vegetable seem to go off very quick at ALDi correct me if i am wrong . i only brought vegetable from them few time !

This years ALDI motorcycle cover was rubbish, lasted 2 weeks
Now in worse condition than the ALDI one from ~10 years ago

  • Aldi is best because most is Australian made

  • I don't mind the Aldi special buys. It makes the mundane task of grocery shopping a little bit exciting for me.

I get to pick up an odd home item or something to add to a christmas/birthday present (kids toys/clothes mostly) without having to go to an additional store.

Also, COVID. They are selling home stuff, like garden goods, without me having to go to Bunnings, which is a big issue right now with the Bunning's click n collect service, they have been taking ages.

  • It really depends on what you are buying.
For nuts, Coles and Woolies have better options.
For fresh produces, Aldi is cheaper and good quality.

I don't live in a black or white world.
