Source for Unusual Spices (Xanthan Gum & MSG)

I am trying to find a couple of elusive ingredients for my spice cupboard. I've tried the usual retail grocery outlets with no luck.

Specifically I'm looking for Xanthan Gum powder (a thickening agent) and Monosodium Glutamate (MSG, a flavour enhancer).

I've only been able to locate supply via Amazon, but I don't need 1kg as a minimum quantity. Somewhere convenient where I can pick up smaller quantities as required is preferred.

Thanks.

Xanthan Gum can be had in the health food aisle in Woolies/Coles. You could get MSG at any Asian supermarket.

    • I tend to avoid that aisle ;). I'll check, thanks.

If you only typed those words to google instead of here you should've the answers.

I did and got the result less than 2secs.

As I said I did check Woolies and Coles. Not all stores carry all of their lines, and there is finite shelf space depending on the size of the store.

  • Mr Vitamins - picked up both these sometime back.

    • Thanks, should have thought of health food stores. I don't automatically associate either to be particularly "healthy".

      • True, but they are a part of alternative diets.

  • Ajinomoto umami seasoning = MSG
the most popular and easy to source.

asian supermarkets, big bags. anyway these are not spices

    • Agreed, but they go in the spice rack, and I'd expect to find them in the spice aisle. Not sure how to categorize them otherwise.

      No.

Anything else we can help you with?

Just a friendly reminder to everyone that MSG = BAD was legit just racism, and it is basically the same 'badness' as salt. Have a good day :)

MSG is available in all asian supermarket. It comes in big transparent bags with the brand Ajinomoto (google and see). There are two versions of it. The Japan manufactured ones are more expensive usually about $10 for 400g. The indonesian one is about half price.

    Uncle Roger will be proud!
