ASICS/Shoes on Kogan - What's your experience with quality

I wear ASICS Nimbus and go through 2 pairs a year on average so I'm obviously always trying to get a good online deal.

I've bought them from Catch before without any issues and this is my first time buying a pair from Kogan.

I've done 400-ish km in running in them plus 10k steps per day over 5 months so I'm not expecting them to be in the best condition but for the first time in 15 years the mesh material where my two little toes are has ripped through on both shoes. Now I've worn all my shoes to death. When they're absolutely beyond running, I push them further for short walks and then keep them as "shoes to wear in mud/okay to destroy". Despite this, the mesh has never broken - it's only the soles that are destroyed.

So before I buy my next pair im trying to work out whether this is a problem with the Nimbus 22, bad luck, or does Kogan get defect stock? Anyone have experience with ASICS or other sneakers on Kogan?

  • Common Asics problem/planned obsolescence… Dad does park runs, and he said he saw quite a few asics wearers with the same problem. "fix" is to use tape on the insides (before a hole appears) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOGyRPqHMrc Just bought a pair of Asics Patriot 12 from Kogan and they are "legit" eg not fakes, however they do seem to be a grey import. Usually, this means they are slightly worse quality meant for other countries or outlets. The more $$$ in this case is worth it to buy from a retailer to avoid guessing about the quality.

    • smart idea re the tape, i'll do it asap before they get even bigger. thanks for that!

yes - they're definitely "legit" but was curious re quality and it seems the consensus is that they are.

  • +1

They are definitely not legit. I bought exactly the same pair of shoes that I had from the athletes foot. The Kogan ones were inferior quality, different material and very uncomfortable . I sent them back for a refund. They were not the same shoe. This was Asics cumulus.

  • kogan is known to sell fake crap

  • Kogan is renowned for their Grey imports and less than reasonable quality products.

They may be cheaper but the longevity often isn't what the buyers expect.

  • The shoes, especially Asics and similar runners from Catch and Kogan are not necessarily fake, but they are usually shoes made for the Indonesian or other South-East Asian markets. Generally slightly inferior build quality with slightly inferior materials as generally they are made for smaller and lighter wearers. Not us big fat Aussies :)

    • lols yes and lockdown hasn't helped despite my incessant dedication to 10k steps + exercise a few times a week.

I remember before i bought them I was a little worried about quality so I checked an old pair i bought from Running Warehouse (assuming that was aussie stock) and they were made in Indonesia. Based on that, I figured they all came from the same place. But the Kogan pair came from Vietnam. So there does seem to be separate manufacturers and it seems like the consensus is that Kogan/Vietnam quality is worse.

FYI I also have a pair of Nimbus 22 from Catch and they're made in Indonesia which matches with Running Warehouse.

It's been so long since I bought a pair in store that I couldn't tell you if Rebel shoes are the same as Running Warehouse

  • My wife is wearing ASICS Gel-Cumulus from Kogan, and they are genuine. However as Tj1999 said above, those might be imported for other markets so might be a bit different from the same model from other shops.

With GEL-Nimbus 22, they now all have knit-like mesh without any overlay, which I found not as durable. If your toe nail kept on poking holes on shoes, get half a size larger.

  • These are links to fake vs real videos. Some are in different languages. The fake quality is really good. The best were supposed to be Aliexpress fakes before they got deleted. These are worse than the "grey imports" that kogan sells, but who knows really… Online sellers can't fake check every single pair, so some may be switched out, especially for higher models. I am happy with my "cheapie" Patriot 12.

  • Kogan shoes are legit, you're getting the same pairs that came out of the factory.
I have found though that asics are getting less reliable as the generations have gone on. I think it may have to do with making the shoes lighter or as has been pointed out before, planned obsolescence.

i've stopped wearing Nimbuses because of the same reasons, i was going through them faster though, you might be unlucky and have a larger toe/need for a bigger toe box.

Ever since switching back to Brooks Glycerins i've noticed they're wearing better, they would be my pick.

  • I don't buy from Kogan. I just generally get from Factory outlets or from running warehouse when they are getting in newer models.

The mesh on the toes does have a noticeable issue but check your toe box space. Our feet changes sizes ever so slightly as we grow older. Do take note that if you do a lot of running, your feet actually expands during running, thereby pushing your toes to the mesh causing quicker wear and tear.

My ASICS GT-2000 only started to wear out at the toes after I have done some 1,200km on them (FYI: I average about 50km a week). YMMV.
