Switch Games for Special Needs Kids

Hi peeps,

I'm crossing my fingers that this is a less loaded topic than my last.

I don't have a Switch myself but am wanting to explore some game options for a kid with autism. Attention span not great and concepts need to be basic. Difficult games won't be learnt as interest will dwindle if a YouTube video showing a solution can't be found.

Generally he plays open world type games as there's more freedom in play, less structure etc. I'm wanting to find him a few games that are enjoyable etc but am finding it hard to ascertain best options for a child that isn't at the same developmental level as the norm.

No other consoles or pc based games, Switch only at this stage.any direction would be appreciated. Thankyou

Minecraft, but he probably already plays that.
Animal Crossing can be a bit boring, but does have a lot of repetitive tasks he can do, and building an island is fun and rewarding.
WarioWare could be good to, basically a huge collection of minigames, which you can play multiplayer.

Unpacking is coming out on Nov 2 and it'll be on Switch.
It's a very calm, relaxing game and very easy to play.

Pokemon Snap is a pretty easy game as well if you're not trying to 100% it.
Just sit back and let the cart take you through the scene while you photograph Pokemon.

  • Have you considered if he would be into motion control games? For example something like Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. There are some different events to do. You can choose which ones you're into. They're pretty easy to learn and honestly not that hard to do better than the NPCs (at least the few events I've tried). It would also be easy for someone to show him how to do it and then he can do it on his own (or they're quite fun to play together, some of them are coop too, like I played doubles tennis on the same team as my housemate against NPCs). There's also Mario Kart Deluxe 8 where you can get the $20 steering wheels so there are not as many buttons to figure out, people recommend it for non-gamers.

These have simple concepts - do one sporting event, race around the track. They're easy to learn, but can be harder to master, with the Olympics ones there are more events to learn for example and Mario Kart you can increase the speed of the vehicles to make it harder. One thing to note though with the Olympics ones is you probably want him using the wrist strap as it requires using the joy cons on their own - you may be able to get a cover to protect the joycons/anything they hit instead though.

Also if you're getting the lite console these won't be good out of the box. These two are also not cheap games.

I'll have a think about some other games, I'm just working at the moment. I struggle with video games, so some of the ones I find easier might be good for him. Getting a large micro SD and trying out some of the games on sale at https://www.dekudeals.com/ means you can probably try out some of the games on sale pretty cheaply, so not a big deal if they're not a hit.

Edit: Just realised it's probably not for your child, but one who already has a Switch, so the above suggestions may not be helpful.

  • The poster of the following deal is in a similar situation to yourself, and he bought railway empire for his kid. Your needs might be different, but it might be worthwhile. I have it myself and it is pretty addictive but not overly complex -more like a puzzle game.

  • Streets of Rage 4 Anniversary Edition is enjoyable for single player and even better as co-op if someone is there to play.
Easy pick up and play game for anyone on the easier settings.
'kid' so not sure his age but only cartoon violence and not gory so should be fine.
