Surfboard for 12 Year Old

Hi.
Looking for advice please.
12 year old daughter, 55kg, 5'2", can surf a bit.
Looking for a cheap second hand board for her.
Seeing a few 6'6", 20¾, 2¾ boards around.
Would that be an ok starting board?
Thanks

  • Sounds too long, and may be difficult to manoeuvre. Keeping in mind I stopped regular surfing 30 years ago, my longest board was 6'1" and I'm heavier and taller than your daughter. Last time I went out on my old Jim Banks it didn't lack buoyancy and I would have been 80kgs then.

I'd probably aim more towards a mini-mal type board depending on ability. Something with a rounded nose, plenty of volume.

Softboards are great as they reduce the amount of damage a runaway board can do, recommend that if she is still learning.

  • Yeah id agree on going big, Nug's sounds like he knows how to surf. If still learning she will catch waaaay more waves on a bigger board and if she wants to start doing more moves progress onto a normal thruster!

  • If just starting out go for a mini mal or foamy. As mentioned above, the volume will help for balance and buoyancy which will help when learning and it wont hurt as much if you get hit by it.

    Edit:
If you are committed to a short board though
my old short board is 6.0
    18 1/8 x 2 5/8
And that suited me fine at 70kgs.
A child should be ok on similar size.

A 6.6 shortboard is practically a mini mal without the help and balance of buoyancy to a child, so personally I’d go for around a 6.0 and a bit thicker if you want a nice middle ground.
