Laptop 4TB HDD Where to Buy The Best Value?

Hi,

I am trying to find either an external 2.5 HDD or (ideally) just an internal 4TB 2.5 inch laptop SATA HDD.

It seems that those external Seagate 4TB 2.5 portable drives can be taken apart to get a 2.5 inch drive from them? They were regularly around $100 when reduced but now struggling to find one for weeks.

Suprisingly, seems to be no regular internal 2.5 inch drives of comparable price?.. Weird, there is one just like that in a portable USB drive plus external enclosure.

Also, there is some kind of an OS limitation of 2 TB? So you just need to split a drive into two logical partitions?

Does your laptop have an SSD already? If not, get an SSD main drive instead. It's a huge difference.

    • it does… this is going to be secondary drive for data storage only…

      • Then yes, shucking a Seagate 4TB portable when they're $99 again is the way to go.

can only find external 4tb 2.5 for 140 delivered . I found internal which were more expensive for just the hdd . weird economics happening there.

  • Those 4TB Seagate drives can be pulled apart but are too thick to fit the average laptop. If the laptop has a spinning drive already then 9.5 mm is the maximum size. If an SSD then usually only 7 mm. Officeworks used to be good for the Seagates and similar.

  • No OS limitation of 2TB as long as you set the drive to be GPT.

  • https://www.computeralliance.com.au/4tb-samsung-2.5-870-qvo-… - $470 though.

Samsung 4TB QVO w/ copy of Farcry 6.

Alternatively, perhaps a used SATA enterprise 4TB SSD?

    • HDD not SSD. But thanks anyway.

      • Honestly, if it's going into a laptop the better option to go SSD. Not only will it have the potential to speed it up quite a bit, it'll also be a bit hardier when it comes to usage. I'd hate to have a 4TB HDD with tonnes of data, on a laptop, go belly up due to constantly being moved around, bumped, jostled etc.

        • What's the point if there will be another copy of it stored externally? Really this is for music and family photos. Under which scenario will I lack speed for this if it is going to be a SATA HDD?

          • @Musiclover: ok. perhaps in future lead with the use case as it'll give others a better understanding of what kinda drive to recommend.

Still stand by my statement wrt SSDs in laptops though, if you can even get a 2.5" mechanical HDD of that capacity for a laptop (it'll probably be too tall), you're almost certain to get an SMR drive and already be nearly 2/3 of the way toward the cost of an SDD (which will more readily fit in the internal drive space and be more resistant to vibration / shock etc).

Good luck.. check out https://au.pcpartpicker.com/ if you need help to narrow down your options.
