Laptop $500-$600

Looking for a decent laptop for around $500 to $600, there are so many out there and i have no idea what to look for.
I'm not using it for gaming. Just Uni and maybe a bit of music production like the program Ableton Live.
Thanks!

  • Not sure what size the screen would you like. My old Compaq CQ61 totally died couple weeks ago, and I'm going to downsize this time and grap one Samsung 350u2b (12.5in) this weekend. Pretty decent specs at the $600 price level.
    Here is some links:

Or you can order Lenovo ThinkPad EDGE E320 (13in) online. After Powerbuy Cashback, it will about $120 cheaper than Samsung, but with the some specs.

    • The only thing i dont like about the Samsung is the screen might be too small and it doesnt have a cd/dvd player. Ill have to have a look in store to see what size im looking for.
The only laptop i can find online that seems good is this: http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Com…
There isnt much information on the internet about it except for this which seems to only say good things about it: http://apcmag.com/notebookhunter/toshiba-satellite-l7500qm.h…
I also have a Coles staff discount card which works at Officeworks and im hoping it would work on goods at this price giving me 5% off.

      Thoughts?

      • The Toshiba you found at Officeworks is not bad (love the colour white), specs are as good as the Samsung with even bigger hard disk. It has the bigger screen with internal DVD drive. The only down side is the weight - 2.6kg, compare to the Samsung 1.4kg. If the weight/portable is not an issue for you, this could be a good buy plus you probably can get an extra 5% off on the top of that.

I also couldn't find any review of the exact model on the net, even on Amazon. But I have good experience with Toshiba before. My first laptop was a Toshiba Portégé, and it lasted for Five long years!!!

Regarding the Samsung size, you can go to Hardly Normal and have a look at it. They have it on display, just ignore the price.

        • Yeah had a look at the Samsung, its too small for me. I went into Officeworks and they do not stock the Toshiba anymore. I went into Centrecom and the guy told me this was my best option for an i5: http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/43343qm-lenovo-g570-4334…

I would go for the cheaper model as i dont need such a big hard drive but no stores seem to have it in stock.

  • Probably best to go instore somewhere and just look around at what you might want first. Don't buy instore, and don't buy ebay (ebay good for pricing tho, getting close to an ebay price is generally good).
