Recommendations for Small, Quiet PC

Currently using a very old and slow netbook in a drawer to run Python scripts and a discord server.
Looking to replace it with something cheap, quiet, and I assume almost anything will be faster than what I have now.
Doesn't need to have a lot of grunt, almost anything will do. The old netbook does 32bit only which has started to become an issue.

Recommendations? Used is fine.

Have a look on ebay for a used Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny.

Sounds like the cheapest NUC you can find would be ideal

  • I'm using an old MacBook Pro running Ubuntu as a server. As you said, any anything may do.

It's an outdated MacBook Pro, but still "new" enough to have an SSD, so it's quieter. I like the built in display/keyboard, in case I need troubleshooting. It also runs in a closed lid which helps avoid dust on the keyboard, and make it fit on the shelf. The fan will come up if needed, but rarely.

So I like SSD laptop with ethernet port.

    try a raspberry pi

  • Not sure if it fits the bill, but the second hand Dell Optiplex 9020's can be had for around $150 - $250 are reliable, reasonably quiet and are easy to come by.

They're a small form factor machine so don't use a lot of space.

On marketplace I see 2 cheap in my area right now, one for $175 and one for $220 - so easy to come by.

    • Yes, I saw these… are they quiet?

      • i just got a hp elitedesk usdt and its not bad idle, under load it can get pretty noisy, mainly because the BIOS ramps the fans up pretty fast even on the lowest setting, and I don't think there is a way you can tweak it lower

      • A bit subjective, but they're the quietest desktop machines we have at home. They're not loud like a gaming rig or what-not.

  • Used Dell / HP / Lenovo SFF systems are the way to go. Upgradable too if you want more RAM / storage.

  • Dell micro is handy for this.

  • What's the requirement for running a Discord server? I thought you can't self-host one?

For something quiet & cheap, and assume your Python scripts are platform independent, a RasPi with passively cooled case is relatively cheap & performant.

    • Sorry, by running a discord server I meant I have created my own one, hosted by Discord and I run a Discord bot on it. It just really feels like mine heh
