Advice for 5700G build - Add additional display

Built a 5700G with a motherboard that only has one HDMI out port (MSI x570 Tomahawk)

What are the cheapest ways I can get another display out?

  • Should a buy a cheap graphics card with HDMI or a thunderbolt 3 card?

I was initially waiting for the prices of graphics cards to go down.

Edit:
I am not sure the MSIx750 actually supports a Thunderbolt 3 card anymore even though the manual it came with says it does "Thunderbolt card needs to support RTD3".

As I have found a few articles like this online:

GT710 is the cheapest 'new' card that is out in the market. Do note it's a legacy card though with no further driver updates from green team, but I doubt that matters for a display adapter.

If you want even cheaper, perhaps second hand Radeon R5 240. Also old as dirt but has HDMI output. Can't complain for $28.99 with free postage.

    • I was about to post the same, I have seen some old Quadro cards for similar prices. But all depends on the resolution OP needs (like 4K ? )
May be USB-C HDMI dongle could be used if USB-C supports DP ?

I have a 7600 from about 2006 which might work for you.

I would get a GTX970 if you can score one cheap. I purchased one recently for $160 but I do understand that the GPU market is bloated atm. It is an additional cost apart from the entry level GT710 however if will give your system so much more grunt so you can hold off longer for the replacement.

  • Cheapest is a USB-C to HDMI cable like one of the following:

    https://www.kmart.com.au/product/usb-c-to-hdmi-cable---3m/2370325
    https://www.kmart.com.au/product/usb-c-to-hdmi-+-vga-adaptor…

    Google results…. Kmart… wtf…

These should IMHO only be used for 2D and text and simple ancient 3D games. These are not suitable for modern games IMHO.
