Opinion on Upgrade Parts (Aim Is to to Keep under $1000 or Lower)

Hi I plan to upgrade to the following:

$419— AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor
$165— MSI B550-A PRO ATX AM4 Motherboard
$169— G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory F4-3600C16D-16GVK

EDIT: $149— MSI GeForce GT 1030 DDR4 2 GB Video Card
EDIT: Will not consider this card and wait for price drop on a better card and go 5600x thx everyone

I've already received advise from comments here on OzB. Thanks to all!

1) What do you think of my final choice? Also I wonder with the next 12th gen cpus coming out, I dont mind waiting for the prices especially on the DDR4 to drop, how much of a drop should I expect and any time frame?
2) From my research and asking around, I've learnt that the memory I've selected that 2x8GB is sufficient plus its a B die and is on the MSI QVL. That's the only reason I picked the memory and open to suggestions.
3) According to ppp, I may need to update the BIOS on the mobo to use the 5600x? Is this correct?

thank you

    You shouldn't buy a GT 1030 for $149 upgrade to a Ryzen 5 5600G or 5700G instead.

    $505 - AMD Ryzen 7 5700G
    $110 - Crucial Ballistix 16 GB 3600 MHz CL16

Was just about to comment this.

A 1030 isn't very powerful and integrated graphics on 5700G will match or beat the 1030. Random comparison video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnHg3kPRerA

You are better off saving up for something like a 1060 or 1660 down the track as an upgrade. Or hopefully wait for prices to come down to reasonable levels and get a used card.

      • Sorry, failed to mention I still have my trusty GT 730 from my current pc that still works (lowest setting everything to play Life is strange true colours… jsut playing for the story lol)

Reason I want GT 1030 is I plan to keep my existing DVI/VGA monitors and I could always play AAA games on the ps4

I dont mind using the GT730, so 5600x and wait for the price to drop and get a better card??

    • Thank you

Researching on the 5600G, I came across a few comments that the "cpu performance is less compared to the 5600x"? So that what I though about.

The crucial not being a b die and not being on the qvl is not an issue? thank you

If you go with 5600G another thing you need to note is you will lose PCIE 4.0 support

AMD employee explains why it is so: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/pvq4bw/comment/hejz42c…

That said $149 for a GT1030 is really bad value but unfortunately I don't have a recommendation for decently priced mid-range offerings. Using whatever you have now is the best option

        • TIL Interesting! Thank you

5600G is slower than the 5600X but not exactly crap - it is comparable to the 1140(F)0-11600K(F) and a bit ahead of the 10600K(F) and a bit more again ahead of the R5 3600 - basically it is the second fastest 6 core CPU on the market after the 5600X, it is hardly crap (thought the PCIe limitation is a bigger issue - do your own research there - thought the biggest issue is with the x8 GPUs like the RX5500XT and RX6600XT, normal x16 GPUs aren't really limited yet with PCIe 3.0 x16, unless you're talking 3070/2080Ti or better and then it is only in certain circumstances and not much of a loss that you might be better off with the Gen3 and the more powerful 5600G than having Gen4 and a weaker R5 3600 - not sure exactly where the line is with the big GPUs, the real issue is the crappy x8 ones which need Gen4 to work right)

So you lose a bit of CPU performance but get your GPU upgrade for "free" - you just have to pick a motherboard with a DVI port, or use a HDMI to DVI adaptor

The Crucial ram is most likely (almost certainly) Micron Rev E, which is considered one of the best ICs after B-Die for over-clocking (I have some older 3000c15 sticks that run stable tuned 4000c16 on Intel, and 4400c20 was stable too but loose as hell) - either way with Ryzen you'll not go any faster than 3800 anyway to keep the IF in sync (or with the better IMC in the 5600G you might be able to hit 4000 while in sync with 3800 the "safe bet" that 3600 is on the normal chiplet Ryzens) - not being on the QVL shouldn't matter, but if you're more comfortable spending the bit more $$$ to get both B-Die and be on the QVL, then go for it.

        • Thank you! I have lots to consider and research.

What do you expect to get out of an upgrade and what are you upgrading from?

I did a big upgrade the start of this year, except for gaming, some quicker load/boat times (mostly thanks to a fast m2 drives) and a few work things I do I noticed very little difference from the i7-4770k upgrade to Ryzen 3700x. Unless you have a specific need in mind, you might be best off throwing in a newer GPU into your current system.

    • Cheers, I will take all the advise and looks like I gotta research on gpu now lol.
