Kitchen Appliances for 1 Person Recommendations

Hi guys,
I will be moving out by myself soon and want to buy the things I will need.

I will be moving into a small inner suburbs, 1-2 bedroom unit or apartment. Given I won’t have much space, what’s kitchen appliances do you recommend I get? I’m located in Vic

My thoughts so far is:
- kettle/toaster
- microwave
- air fryer
-blender/juicer (ideally a 2 in 1 like Ninja)
- all in one rice cooker/slow cooker/pressure cooker

I do enjoy cooking so I would love to get other appliances too like a chopper, stand mixer, sandwich press, etc. but unfortunately just won’t have the space

You seem to have forgotten the almighty fridge!
(Don't be tempted by one of those smaller bar fridges because, even though you're by yourself, it just won't be enough. Get a normal sized fridge!)

I have the braun multimix 9 which is quite multifunctional as a chopper, stick mixer, and light dough kneading.

    Hi,

Often Toasters and Kettles are sold in a Bundle.
Don't fall for that trap. Because if the Toaster dies, you need to
return both items for a Credit or Refund.

Get a 1000W Microwave because most Meals have times in minutes for 1000W.

    Air Fryers Rule. :+)

I would rather a sandwich press than a toaster. Really depends on what you cook……but definitely get kettle/fridge/microwave as the bare minimum.

    • I second a sandwich press. It can "toast" bread but also do much more like heating up a kebab roll. Way better than using the microwave.

      • That’s what air fryers are for ;)

  • they are expensive but i recommend the microwave I have, it acts as a very good oven too and is huge (whole chicken easily), I dont know about other brands or models but I find i use this more than my oven (oven has a less constant temperature) and I imagine it dose a similar job to the air fryer while being larger.
If i wanted to minimize my kitchen appliances this and a good pressure/rice cooker would probably do most things.
*one I have also grills, but I have never tried it

cooker I have it this, dose a great job on the rice, only issue would be you need to put the rubber ring / seal on properly and when you dont it can be annoying to wait 10 min and find it isnt gaining pressure.

if you plan on getting an oven/air fryer combo, ditch the toaster

  • If you end up getting a place with a small kitchen, just use your oven, don’t waste space on an air fryer as it will probably end up being too painful to bring it out to use if there’s no bench space to put it on.

My airfryer oven gets used more than my oven these days. probably almost daily. It has it's own permanent place.

      • If you have the space, then sure. It was more to say wait until they’ve found a place before buying those extra appliances.

Or, if having all of those (air fryer/juicer) is important, make sure you pick a place with a large enough kitchen to store and use them.

  • My recommendation for a microwave on the cheaper end of the scale is a basic one from LG. It is (just) large enough for a large dinner plate, it has a relatively small footprint, and it gets the job done. I picked mine up for $148 a couple of years ago, so it pays to keep an eye out for sales.

I second the recommendation from @Sekhmet2077 in regards to the all-in-one cooker. It is dream to slow cook or pressure cook dishes using it. I find it a little bulky, but I guess that is something that should be expected of an all-in-one cooker.

This egg cooker is brilliant for a cheap unit: https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/sunbeam-poach-and-boil-egg-co…

    • This is a very underrated tool. I have a generic china made one that cost less than $20. Not only does it do eggs, you can also use that to quick steam small items like a pork bun. It is very useful kitchen item.

    • Oh have been wanting one but just couldn't justify the cost yet. Or the counter space

  • I do enjoy cooking

OP, what foods do you enjoy cooking? or aspire to cook one day? …and what foods do you enjoy eating? No point us recommending a sandwich press if you hate bread and wraps, for example :) And/or you may say you love instant noodles, so we'd suggest getting a kettle and electric blanket and be done with it!

  • Think about what you use, like a blender is only good if you're making food that needs a blender. I'm in a similiar situation, but don't have a blender because the foods I like just aren't blender foods.

Also air fryers are just small fan forced ovens with baskets. See how the oven in your new place goes, and buy a basket for things you want to use that way.

Other recommendation is that you shouldn't buy things until you need them, you'll end up saving heaps in crap you don't need that you have to store somewhere and fill up your apartment.

  • Get a Magimix food processor. This is the appliance I use most and mine has lasted, at least, ten years with lots of use.

    • pretty sure the one my wife uses is over 30years old

      • In fact the new ones come with a 30 year motor warranty. I went through a few Brevilles before I swallowed hard and bought the Magimix. I managed to get a few additional slicing discs gratis as well. These are great for chopping onions.
