Best value mineral-based sunscreen?

Hi all,

I know there's a poll thread about sunscreen, but that didn't mention or sort by composition, and I'm looking for a mineral-based (titanium oxide, zinc oxide, etc) product.

Not really fussed about being invisible or really any other factor other than 1. It has a decent amount of titanium and/or zinc in it so that it works, and 2. It's decent volume per $. I suppose it would also be nice if it was easy to apply, didn't stink, spontaneously combust, or acid melt your face off etc

Cheers.

I've never tried it, but it's about the cheapest one I've seen.

This one was on sale the other day, but it back up to regular price now: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B08HJ6F4BC/ref=ppx_yo_d…

    • Wow, that woolies one seems really cheap. Though I think given that the Zinc content isn't specified, and it's the 3rd ingredient in the list, it's probably not a major proportion of the formula haha.

That second link seems perfect - It has a 30% off coupon checkbox apparently? I've never seen that on Amazon!

  • For item #1, I recommend SunButter https://sunbutteroceans.com.au/
    It certainly works well.

Up to you if you think the value is there.

    • Err, which product in particular? There's a few on the site.

$30 for a tin seems a bit much. Branding is amusingly not quite OzBargain style either :P

      • This one works well https://sunbutteroceans.com.au/products/sunbutter-50spf-wate…
"*100g of non-aqueous solution. This means your tin lasts longer than water-based sunscreens, as well as locking in more of your skins natural moisture…Tins are food grade safe, made from REUSABLE and recyclable material and BPA free. *"

But, again, up to you to identify if the value is there.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't most (all??) SPF30+ are all titanium oxide based?

I would be thinking that the higher the SPF rating the higher the oxide content. Disregarding additives like moisturiser goo and the like, wouldn't the SPF rating be the more important factor rather than the 'active' (passive, I suppose) ingredients?

Cancer Council ones are always good, SPF50+, and even if they're more expensive per L the money goes towards a good cause regardless.

    • +2

I'm no expert, but it seems like Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane and Octocrylene are the two most common active ingredients in modern sunscreen.

      • Yep!

I'm not sure if it's coincidence or I have a weird mild allergy or something, but the summer before covid I made myself sick using liberal amounts of sunscreen containing those.

Since zinc / titanium based formulations are considered the best (if not invisible) anyway, I figured I'd give it a go!

  • My wife and daughter swear by Baby Bum. Generally costs $25 per tube, I usually gets 3-4 tubes from Priceline when they have their half price or 40% off sales.
