Any recommendation on prepaid plans or cheap plans?

Hi,

Just got a new phone outright and looking to save some money on plans. I'm currently on Optus $49 monthly plan (60gb) but I just noticed I don't use up to 60gb (rather 20-30gb max previously, 10gb max during lockdown).

What are some good prepaid / plan deals out there? I would prefer Telstra coverage tbf but Optus is also ok…

Thx in advance

  • My wife and I got on a Boost annual prepaid plan. Good coverage on Telstra network and price was good.

We paid $160 for the year and got 120gb, but looks like it's $170 w/ 100gb at the moment. Might be a bit low for your use but there are more options for more data.

    • Yep, I'm looking at the Boost offer - 260gb / $300 sounds decent enough but it's very similar to monthly plans that others offer ($25 / 20gb at Woolies for example)

One thing that made a difference in our decision is that Boost is on the main Telstra network instead of the wholesale one. Not sure if it has a practical impact but we went for Boost because of that.

I'm personally considering Woolworths Mobile (Telstra Wholesale coverage).

Go for it. Assuming you shop at Woolies (or can), the 10% off one shop per month means the plan basically pays for itself.

      • I don't use the 10% much now as it doesn't stack with many of the rewards offers.

Which ones? I can't see that anywhere in the T&Cs for any offers I have, and hadn't noticed not getting any.

        • It doesn't? So if I use that 10% - it won't top rewards points?

          • @jaemink52: Rewards points are usually fine it is more the $off offers that do not stack however some of the increased rewards point offers do not stack either.

  • Aldi $99 a year plan

      • I reckon this was a good deal - could top up 70GB for $60 which is amazing. Is the deal off forever?

        • I'm pretty sure I saw this in the middle aisle at the Seven Hills, NSW store about an hour ago so maybe it is not available online but still available in store.

Change provider every month and keep your existing mobile number. Buy a starter kit every month. One month telstra, next optus, next voda and then restart with Telstra etc. Make sure you change provider 3-4 days before the month is up. Good luck.

    • i use to do this religiously, but got annoyed by porting taking longer than expected every few months. I would only port once the previous plan had expired and some providers require a sms to confirm the port, but I wouldn't have any credit to send the sms. Also, once in a while, I'd be left without a starter pack ready to go, meaning I had to top up at full price.

These days, I alternate between pre-paid starter kits and groupon deals.

      • I usually have a spare sim starter kit. If you stick to the major telcos, then it is really fast. Should do it in the mornings. Don't do it on a Saturday (sunday is a no no).

  • Coles Mobile 120GB for $150 a year

  • Catch mobile - $89 for 80gb and $120 for 120gb. Even less with student discount and gift cards.

    • Student discount? How do I get that through Catch? Is it through Uniday?

      • Yes - unidays. Only works sometimes though.

Thanks everyone - just looking at all the deals you guys have mentioned.

    Catch (OPTUS) - $120 / 120gb, $89 / 85gb, 1 year prepaid, promotion ends 10/11/21
    Aldi (TELSTRA) - $25 / 20gb monthly plan, $240 / 185gb or $365 / 365 gb, 1 year prepaid ($99 starter pack no longer available)
    Boost (TELSTRA) - $170 / 100gb promo ends 18/10/2021 or $300 / 260gb 1 year prepaid
    Woolworths (TELSTRA) - $150 / 100gb or $200 / 145gb 1 year prepaid - 10% off one shop per month or phone plan $25 / 20gb
    Coles (OPTUS) - $150 / 120gb - 10% one online shop

Is there any additional promotions or discounts I can add on top or is this all the options I have? Would there soon be another promotions down the line? Want to really get the best for value
