Windows 11 on Laptop Showing Increased Battery Discharge Rate?

I have a Dell XPS 9500 15" 4k laptop which, after updating to win 11, seems to be showing significantly higher battery discharge rates (via batterybar).

Before on win 10 it would show 10W or less with office apps and chrome windows open. Now with win 11, it fluctuates between 15 to 20+ W. Projected runtime is down from 7+ hrs to 3+ hrs.

Has anyone else noticed this increase power draw on a laptop? I'm wondering if there is any sort of indexing going on in the background and if this will "settle" after a few days? 🤔

Thanks for taking one for the team by beta testing this!

You're not on your own there OP, there are countless reports of users experiencing the same type of issue posted on the Internet.

It's early days yet for W11 and Micro$oft may address the problem when they get around to it.

  • Is your display at 60Hz?

    • Just checked, the three options are 59.99 Hz, 59.93 Hz and 48 Hz. It is currently set to 59.93Hz, though if I haven't touched this, I'm assuming this would be the same setting as when I was on win 10?

      • Yeah, some laptops allow for a 120Hz option, which is great, but lowers battery life. Though doesn't sound to be the case here :(

I installed 11 on a 15" gen 4 i7 inspiron and it works great. No idea about relative power use though.

  • There are way too many issues with Windows 11 at the moment for me to upgrade my main PC and Laptop. Getting it working in a Virtual environment to play with was a PITA.

I expect there to be bugs coming out until the end of the year. It looks like it was released too early and the latest version was not tested on enough devices due to the last minute changes MS included.

Looks like it's Vista MK2 w.r.t. issues and quality and changes that affect the end user.

I haven't noticed any issues with Windows 11 here, I use it for video editing with Adobe Premiere and audio editing with Pro Tools and it has been flawless.

I installed it on my laptop and haven't noticed any issues, I feel like it is the same. Mine is a metabox and this was during the Beta.

windows 10/11 are extremely bad with the battery, I can't extract more than 4 hours of them doing basic stuff while on mac i get 8-10

    • ^not wrong but a bit irrelevant

  • There was a performance issue which already been fixed with the new update (only impacts AMD processors) that could also impact your battery.

I have not noticed any battery drain issues on my Surface Book 2 or Surface Laptop 3 (both on Intel) I get all day used from both of them.

  • No issues on my Surface Pro 3 that isn't even officially supported.

Have you looked in Task Manager to see what is using more power?

  • As I'm typing this now, the discharge rate has dropped to under 10W again which seems to be back to normal! Seems like things have started to "settle"? In any case, I'm relieved.
