In tank fuel filter and pump replacement..laser

Hey guys

I'm due for a fuel filter replacement on my 2000 laser and I thought I'd get the pump done too considering its joined to the filter.

Was just wondering if I should buy the 2 in 1 already assembled or the pump and filter seperate.

Are they much trouble to assemble?

Also what brand pumps are good?

Bosch and Goss start around $60 on eBay.

Are there any benefits regarding fuel economy/ power if I buy a more expensive pump?

Cheers

  • If you can get a complete Bosch assembly for $60, go with that.

    • That's just the pump alone price. Ryco make a filter that's around another $60.

But $120 for both on eBay is still much cheaper than Repco etc.

But yeah I just thought if I'm paying someone to fit it 2 in 1 might be easier for them.

      • It's not a terribly hard job if you are slightly handy.

  • I did the fuel filter on our 2000 Mazda 323 (same as laser) in 2019.

Bought the filter cage off eBay (approx $60). I think it was Wesfil(?????). The fitment wasn't great and to this day I'm still not sure I got the o-rings seated properly as they just sat on the surface of the interface rather than going into the body. I assume I did because the GF regularly runs it down to fumes and it still goes fine.

In hindsight, if I'd known there was a filter & pump assembly ready to drop in for $120 I probably would have bought that but kept the old pump as a spare.

I even made a video of the process for my YT channel but it was so crap I didn't publish it.

    • Hey Brad,

Yeah I'm not sure about the $120 assembled though. The only assembled unit I can find is a Goss one for around $200.

But I'm thinking I'll probably just pay it as I'd be paying a mechanic labour time anyway if I gave him the filter and pump seperate.

      • If you had the assembly you could probably DIY as it isn't a difficult job.

Run the tank down to 1/4.
        Remove the seat.
        disconnect the wiring.
I think the hoses were quick connects (maybe).
the plate is held in my fasteners, not one of those stupid rings.

        • Ok thanks.

Did you notice better fuel economy etc after doing it? I doubt mines ever been done so I expect it to be pretty dirty

          • @Shane34: We thrash the daylights out of it and don't monitor economy.

It was on about 130k and probably neve done or done once. It didn't seem particularly dirty.

The accord also has an in-tank filter. I did that at ~120k and it wasn't very dirty either.

The same with air filters. I do them every 50k and they look mint. I'm not sure how others get them so dirty
