Hi everyone, as above. Could anyone help me out and let me know what mobile they would recommend for under $700?

Happy for Redmi, Poco, Huawei etc recommendations as well vs the Samsung GooglePixel Apple triad.

Features I'm looking for are:
min 8gb ram
256gb storage (or expendable)
good ish camera

Samsung Galaxy A52-S 5G. One of the best phones and best value phones available.

Here are the things that make it awesome:
    (great)
-Flagship Processor (QSD 778 is as fast as the QSD 860 which isn't much slower than the QSD 888+)
    - Flagship Screen (adequate +1080p resolution, VRR 120Hz, Bright, Bezel-limited, premium Samsung LTPS OLED)
    - Great Battery Life (4500mAh, very efficient)
    - Good cameras (Selfie and Rear, not quiet flagship level but better than all typical midrange phones)
    - IP67 water resistance (very rare in a "midrange")
    - Headphone Jack (unsure if it supports FM Radio)
    - microSD slot (very useful)
    - Premium features (5G, Wifi 6, NFC, etc etc, some are rate on midrange options)
    - Fingerprint scanner (works well, it's not FaceID)
    - Flat Display (looks better, less slippery, more durable, can use Glass Protector)
    - Weight (190g is heavy but acceptable, unlike many stupid options out there)
    - Looks nice / good colour options
    (good)

    Things that suck:
    (decent)
    - Software (3 years Samsung support is great. Widevine L1. It's not a very nice Skin/OneUI.)
    - Size (not quiet compact, and not really a phablet. Depends on your hand size, and pockets)
    - Plastic Back (I like it, better than Glass imho)
    - Speakers (good loudness, tinnie, not true Stereo speaker, not front-facing)
    - No DeX Support (Not much hope for Custom Roms either)
    - Only 25W Fast-charging (takes 1.5hrs)
    - Hole punch camera (Centre position. Not the superior left-corner, or under-screen, or in bezel)
    - Weird 20:9 aspect ratio, instead of 16:9 or 17:9 or 21:9
    - USB 2.0 port (Type-C)
    (trash)

Me: I'm still using my old OnePlus 7 Pro which I bought on discount, but I somewhat hate it. I don't recommend OnePlus anymore, their software is changing and support has been bad for a while now. Plenty of better phones for cheaper. The above Samsung option came out of nowhere, and I highly recommend it. Remember we can't get LG Phones or Sony Phones in Australia anymore. The new Pixel 6/Pro is a big meh burger for me. The iPhone 13 are tempting, but not for those asking prices.

    • Where can you get this phone?

      • You can buy it directly from Samsung Australia for $649, comes with 2-Year Local Warranty.
There are several variants for this device, the one we got is:
        - 128GB storage / 6GB RAM
        - Single-SIM
        - 25W Charger in the box

        Other variants get:
        - 256GB storage / 8GB RAM
        - Sometimes a hybrid Dual-SIM slot
        - Sometimes only a 15W charger included

It is fairly new device, and I've seen it go anywhere from Under $600 to and to Over $750. Compared to the many $1,000 and $2,000 phones out there, this phone is a steal for $800… let alone $600. But being a fellow tightarse, I recommend you buy it for $600 with Local Warranty. You'll need it as it is possible for something to go wrong within 2-years and this phone is promised to get 3-years of updates (so 2024). If you wait long enough, JB Hifi will do a special on it for ~$520, most likely. Less likely, it might be included in a "Telstra Day" monthly special, in which case you can get huge discounts on it like $400, but I doubt that would happen.

if you wait a little more, you should be able to get a OnePlus 9RT from somewhere for around that price,

Best Android CPU for the moment (snapdragon 888), basically best storage(UFS 3.1), and 8~12G LPDDR5 RAM(also best) depends on which one u buy.

not to mention 5G network, 120Hz screen, 65w fast charging, under screen fingerprint sensor and other bells and whistles.

Camera's using Sony IMX766 50-megapixel with a few other sensor in combination—— not the best of the best, but definitely not low end.

I've been using OnePlus 5T with Snapdragon 835, and its still very smooth until now, though I don't play mobile games so it really doesn't matter that much.

The only small deal breaker for me is that it doesn't come with USB3.0 Type C but only USB 2.0, so it won't connect to a TV via TypeC-HDMI to stream anything from the phone (can still Chrome Cast so not the end of the world)

    • Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

Have not come across it on the threads so far and I do see it selling for $750 for 12g ram, 256gb here https://www.nextbuying.com/oneplus-9rt-p000850.html?gclid=Cj… . Have not bought from this website before though so unsure if its legit, but just thought I'd share.

      • I didn't know this is legit or not either, and that's why I didn't share.

This phone was only out very recently(weeks ago?), and demands seems pretty high so you might need to wait a bit no matter where you buy it.

As far as phone goes I don't think you can go wrong with this model

    A preowned iPhone probably.

  • S21 with all the deals happening via EPP or otherwise

  • Poco F3 global version
