(profanity) yeah. I'm going to plunder Caracas so hard.

    Both are absolutely brilliant!

  • I remember playing Pirates back in the day
    Is Gold a different version?

Which one would be the one to buy?

The 2005 version is 3D with new minigames etc. Both are very good, but quite a few reviews say the Steam version of Gold is a terrible port.

When I retried the 2005 version a while back was some of the timing seemed messed up on faster systems, but the current Steam version may not have that problem since reviews don't seem to mention it.

      • Not very familiar with steam
Would l be able to play the game "not online" at my own pace?

        • Yep. In fact, that's the only way you'd be able to play these two.

    • Pretty sure Gold is the original game

      • Pirates! Gold is a 1993 remaster of the 1987 original Sid Meier's Pirates!

The best game I ever owned on the Commodore 64.

    With apologies to Hounded…

Nah, for me that title goes to Street Rod.
You might say this one was 'close, but no cigar'

      • +2

Put plenty of hours into that too (and Street Rod 2) hotting up Grease-era lime green Chevy to take on the King for pink slips…

But could never put it above the likes of Pirates!, IK+, Target Renegade, Space Rogue, Airborne Soldier, Emlyn Hughes, Summer & Winter & World + California Games.

I loved bionic commando and defender of the crown to go with those

@Jackson: Trying to calculate the lunarium values in Rocket Ranger that you were supposed to have a copy protection code wheel for made it a significantly more challenging game…

            • @Sven Viking: The eighties were indeed, the golden age of piracy.

A big tip of the hat to Turbo Tape 2000…

@Sven Viking: This was where I fell over! :(

              • +1

@Jackson: A fat lot of good you two would be to all of us needing to know what month the Silver Train would be in Panama…

      • Changing that 2 barrel carb to a 4 barrel was always a winner

    • Man it took me a whole 5 minutes to remember what hounded was, I had a mate who loved that game, I never really felt it.

  • I personally preferred port royale 2

Played and owned the original and Gold to death on the Amiga and PC BITD. I haven't really sunk more than a couple of hours into a game in the last 10 years, but got Pirates! 2005 on a whim last year and played it for a week straight. Not sure whether anyone without nostalgia for the series would like it, but if you are a series veteran and haven't played the 2005 reboot, do yourself a favour and nab it!

    • Have played the 2005 version and really liked it
Given you've played both If I were to buy just the one which one would you suggest as the better buy?

      • -1

Definitely the 2005 version. Can't go back to Gold now, gameplay is too limited and nostalgia only goes so far.

        • +1

I still got 2005 version on original Xbox

          • @BH1: Didn't realise it came out on the OG Xbox - going to have to grab that!

        • Thanks

Never played the OG, but i remember playing the 2005 remake and it was fun af. Repetitive after a while once you see the formula. Still heaps of fun though
