Green Coffee Beans - Where to Buy?

I'd like to try roasting coffee beans. Any suggestions or recommendations on where to buy decent, good value, green coffee beans?

  • Where are you located? Do you want to buy in store or online (or either)?

Google "coffee bean roasters" and ask them if they sell non roasted beans.

Coffeesnobs.com.au have bought green beans from there over the years. Good price and quality.

Hey Roaster! I buy all of my green beans from a few places including Di Bartoli, CoffeeSnobs and Ministry.

Have you bought or built a roasting rig?

      Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm just going to try a Breville Crazy Popper. I was about to sell it on Facebook MP then stumbled across a coffee roasting post on coffee snobs… and now I feel like I'm about to enter a rabbit hole.

The rabbit hole is deep! Check out this guy who has one of the best DIY rigs in Australia IMHO - built with an old bread oven, a heat gun, temperature probes and a couple of other bits and pieces. He belts out some amazing roasts every week!

I didn't have the patience to persist with my stovetop/BBQ drum roaster and purchased a KN-8828B-2K. That was 11 years ago and it's still going strong.

Good luck with the home roasting. Lots to learn and lots of failure before you get the hang of it. But there is something deeply satisfying about drinking a brew from beans you've roasted yourself. That said, I'm so busy at the moment that I'm buying roasted beans 80% of the time. Good thing is that green beans have a VERY long shelf life.

        • I use a bread machine and really haven't found anything under $5000 that can match it as I can do 1 kg at time (about 10 days worth for me). Used to have coffeesnobs temp probes before I retightened one and the probe broke (very delicate threaded sleave)

          • @Janko: I love DIY hosting rigs but got to the point where I was happy to trade-off some level of control for improved aesthetics, cleaner workflow and wife acceptance factor ;-)

I'd like to do 500g - 1kg roasts for sharing with family, friends and fellow coffee geeks. There's now a V2 Aillio Bullet R1 and it is a sweet piece of kit. Only feature that's missing is an automatic stirring arm for the cooling tray.

Dear Santa - please take note ;-)

We get ours from beanbay, you wont go wrong.

What roaster are you going to use?

Thanks, just a Breville Crazy Popper. Bought some from Beanbay.

      • Have fun!

I started with a popcorn machine too and ended up with an expensive Kaffelogic Nano which does a perfect small roast every time. :)

      • Can't go wrong with the Beanbay beans! I've been buying them for over a year now and happy with every bean I've had. Also happy with the Genecafe roaster I bought from them too.

What beans did you end up buying?

Depending which area you're in I managed to get some from markets and small Ethiopian grocers.

  • Queen Vic markets if in Melbourne. You can roast in a popcorn maker but careful cos they can burn quickly

  • A cheap convection oven or air fryer works fine.

Even easier is a pan or pot and agitate with a spatula over a low heat.

There's really no need to buy anything specific or fancy.

I buy green beans grown in NSW or North QLD. I put my orders on shuffle.

I only ever started buying green beans because it's very difficult to find blonde roast. Light roast is acceptable, but even that is quite rare nowadays (although becoming slowly more common, as lightly roasted beans are a more recent phenomenon).
