Delta Flights MEL to LAX or MEL to SAN around $1100AUD Depart Late Nov, Return Jan 2013

130

MEL to LAX $1101 (fly out Nov 22, 27, 29, return Jan 1, 6, 9 or 12)
MEL to SAN $1106 (Diego not Francisco - same dates)

Some lucky random surfing lead me to these dates (which suit me due to relatively quiet work and uni holidays). Nothing else I've been able to find compares for dates this late in the year. And it beats my usual United on both price and presence of personal video screens for the LA-Melbourne leg (although United say they will be upgrading I don't know the timing)

I actually booked via expedia.com.au as they were able to see a split booking MEL to JFK, SAN to MEL for $1231 - an extra $125 to get me to New York!

  • wierd how return flight cost 600$ less than return… check the price for the 9th Jan LAX to Melb - 1700$ for 1 way.. cheaper to book return flight, not turn up at Melb just to get one way flight

    • "Full-service" airlines generally don't discount one-way fares, so it is often cheaper to buy a return and just not use the return leg.

Be aware that if you do this, you have to fly the outbound leg. If you no-show for the outbound leg then the return is cancelled.

  • some in august september also melb to lax, august 26 dep, return sept 25.. i think it seems if u fly out on a sunday and return on a tuesday it will tend to give that return price? bare in mind from melb delta code share with V Australia so you can book on either website.

  • can't find any good ones late dec to mid feb.

  • +1

Well I'll give the op credit for pointing out it's not United.

Lets hope Qantas & others start competing, although I'd be happy if it was a v.Aust flight, they are excellent.

  • Hi daffyd what dates did you use for the New York flight? Im not having any luck on the Delta or Expedia web sites….

  • Pretty sure we'll only be able to find dates between:
    01 May-16 Jun
    18 Jul-30 Sep
    01 Nov-30 Nov
(where available) as it appears to correspond roughly to:

colspooners, as noted above my flight is split (i.e. different departure/arrival) city. I can still see seats. Search expedia for a Multiple destination booking:
    MEL to NYC 29/11/2012
    SAN to MEL 6/1/2013

Slightly cheaper if I search MEL to NYC then LAX to MEL. I haven't looked for other dates, though, as unlike return flights on an airline's website, multiple destination searches are cumbersome to search flexibly (although kayak seems to be a bit more flexible than others).

Also, out of curiosity, I searched MEL to NYC, NYC to LAX, LAX to MEL (or equally MEL to NYC, NYC to SAN, SAN to MEL) and it gives prices substantially cheaper than MEL to NYC return for the same dates (except for the NYC to LAX bit). Around $1500 (but will depend on your middle date). You may need to set the airline to Delta to avoid it giving you an Alaskan airlines middle flight (which might be fine but if something changes it can be a pain having multiple unrelated airlines on the one ticket).

    Hope that helps!
