There's a 7-Eleven near me. Every so often, it would show prices in the $2.xx range, way way more than the actual price at the station.
I would then go and submit the correct prices and someone then submits prices in the $2.xx range again.
What would be their motivation?
If it's a competitor, why only 7-Eleven, but not change the prices for Ampol/Caltex, United, or BP within a couple of hundred metres?
Took a while for that person to exact revenue. Only started happening recently.

That's an interesting one. And it's only that particular 7-Eleven.
Seems the most likely. Someone has it in for that site, ex customer, employee, contractor, owner’s nemesis etc.
The app won't let you update prices if you are outside a certain radius.
Therefore - disgruntled for unspecified reason, lives close by, doesn't travel much and to lazy or ignorant to use an app to fake GPS location.
Why not just use fuel check?
I think Fuelcheck might be NSW only. Not sure if they have an equivalent in VIC (where OP seems to be)

I'd hazard a guess that the person that submitted the fake price is vaccinated, just going off the percentage of the adult population vaccinated
