Recommendations for Bike Travel Case/Bag

I got into cycling over lockdown and bought a mid-range road bike (second hand) for exercise. Over the summer will be travelling interstate for a few weeks at a time to see family and work, so was looking at buying a bag to take my bike with me to keep it up and not lose momentum. Will be taking into checked luggage on Qantas/Virgin.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I was looking at a hard case but I don't have anywhere really to store it at home. A soft shell case that can be folded down to save space sounds ideal, but unsure of how secure it will be.

Thanks in advance

Buy a hard case second hand on marketplace, use it, then sell it again on marketplace for what you paid for it. Bike box for free and don't have to find storage…

Source: successful done this 3 times myself.

    • Thanks this is a great idea! Will have a look on marketplace!

Have a look at Scicon Aerocomfort. Used it for air travel and had no problems with it. Easy to use and protects the bike well.

For many years I used an EVOC bike bag - I ride mountain bikes though.

It was good for my needs as while riding, I could compress/fold the bag up to place out of the way. Particularly handy when I was travelling by car with bike mounted to it with bag tucked away in boot (not taking up much space at all).

I used the bike for multiple trips and bikes - for reference, my bikes were all $6000+ and I never had issue with that bag or carrier damage.

  • Scicon aero comfort or Evoc are both good options. If you get a soft shell with a frame inside, just loosen off shifters so if they get banged they will fold in not get damaged. Likewise read derailleur is a weak point so can be undone.

Hard shells can be a disadvantage, weight more and baggage handlers chuck them around more as perception is they are tougher.

Another option is get an empty bike box from a bike shop, they are designed for shipping, just need handlebars removing and taping to frame, seen it been used many times.

Decided to end up getting this Thule bag from Amazon. Prices elsewhere are 2x-3x more expensive and has great reviews. As much as buying one of marketplace at the moment.
