Rowing Machines (Water Resistance) Recommendations

In the market to purchase a water rowing machine. interested to know what the fellow ozbs’ are using / recommend on this segment and most importantly can get with a decent bargain / discount.

Have looked into waterrower a1 with s4 monitor and pure design vr2 model. Genki model is cheap but looks dodgy from
the reviews.

What else is out there that’s worth checking out? I’d prefer something that is or can be later upgraded to smart tech with a BT module or app support. Budget max around $1.5k

p.s. not at all interested in magnetic, air or hydraulic rowers (have tried mag and air at gyms before and didnt like them)

—— Update ——

Managed to purchase Water rower A1 S4 model through Rebel’s black friday promotional price. Thanks everyone for helpful info.

Link here if anyone else is interested

No tools required to assembly, took about an hour from unpacking to full assembly and fill water. Seems very well build. (The siphon provided wasn’t working very well though)

I'm not a rower so technique probably horrible but for someone used to exercising on stationary bike or bike I found it very hard keeping in my usual heart rate zone on a Waterrower. Like, exhausting.

Be good if OP linked the machine.

Using a rower is not for the faint hearted or old!

Yes Rowing is very hard especially if you follow the proper technique. Rowing + push ups will pretty much gives you the full body workout and there is not need to do anything else.

  • Concept 2 get good wrap. Should be able to get it at 1.5 without too much haggling

    • I’ve heard good things about this model, I unfortunately prefer the feel of water based machines. When you say should be able to get it at 1.5 which stores do you mean? Thanks in advance

I have a water rower Natural series which I got 6 years ago for $1,300. Cons: 1. easier to row than Concept2 2. water goes cloudy and it's really tedious to drain and then refill (I'm lazy and forgetful) 3. the S4 monitor is not very useful compared to the concept2 but I don't really care that much about my rowing data.

But it is a water rower and given the choice again, I would still get the water rower over Concept2. I like the sound and look of it over Concept2

    • Thanks! Yeah its the same reasons for me too that does it over other types of machines. It’s a shame know about the s4 monitor though. They don’t seem to be in a mood to push out the next version of tech sooner unless you are going to spend the big bucks :-(

For 1.5k, look on Marketplace/Gumtree. You can pick up some solid, excellent condition WaterRower (dual rail). I've managed to upgrade from the A1 to the Oxbridge just flipping and being patient with some of the sellers. Managed to score a mint condition Oxbridge WaterRower at half the retail price with only 42km rowed.

You can also upgrade to the SmartRow pulley which will give you close to Concept2 times.

    • Would you say a dual rail is lot better in the feels and comfort over the standard models?

Ahh this!!! I’ve asked couple of rebel folks and they said they can’t do any better beyond the set price and better wait for black friday / xmas season.

So I thought of asking the community about some
      other models in the meantime

      Thanks for your input!

Dual Rail: Stable, Quieter but Narrow between the legs and slightly more expensive.

Mono Rail: Cheaper, wider between the legs but less stable and nosier.

Both can be upgraded to SmartRow and once it is available in Australia, the add-on called Ergatta (https://ergatta.com/product/upgrade-package/)

        • Thanks I will look closely for this module when its available. I went ahead and purchased mono-rail model (waterrower a1 s4 select ash color) as it went on sale today. The dual rail model was only available with delivery (+150) which sadly was bit too much with that added cost.

For now I will be mainly using apple watch for fitness data/ tracking :-)
