Cleaning Vinyl Floor Planks Machine

Does anyone know of a motorised machine that can effectively clean luxury vinyl floor boards without damaging it, my mother lives on her own and loves to keep her floors clean but has now reach the age where lots of manual repetitive labour isnt too welcoming. She is devastated that she cannot clean her floors twice weekly. She finds the mopping motion too difficult for her 100 sqm home.

Has anyone used a motorised mop?
The bissell crosswave looks interesting but not sure of the effectiveness.

Any other suggestions is highly appreciated.

Maybe a robot vac with mopping in conjunction with a light spray mop that can be easily manoeuvred? The mopping functions on robot vacs are usually not good enough to give a good clean.

    • Yeah I don't think she would like the idea of a robot…she's stuck in her ways

Luxury vinyl floor boards? That’s funny.

I suppose you’ll be advising your mum of your findings on her private white slimline telephone and then taking tea in her Royal Doulton with the hand-painted periwinkles when you deliver your machine.

    • That's what they are called. I'm just using the name on the box, not that I think its any luxury at all

@ Euphemistic I hope you're not going to spoil things with lower middle-class humour.

Maybe. I’m still haven’t received an invite to the candlelight supper.

That thing would be tiring to push around.

    Maybe get a different mop?

Something like this which is essentially a big cloth, which you pass all the floors with once, no wringing or anything, then the cloth goes in the washing machine.

    • Might have to look into that

We have those sort of floorboards. We were told, by an employee of Bunnings actually, that the best way to clean the floors is to lightly spray with white vinegar, and clean off with that kind of mop. My wife cleans that way, yes the vinegar stinks for 10 minutes, but the floors look great.

    Maybe get her a cleaner?
Sometimes the government will partially pay for this if she’s on a pension.

    • This is the correct answer - see here

    • This is a decent option but feedback from a lot of people who have cleaning through my aged care providers is that they don’t do an amazing job. Of course this is variable though. If she doesn’t need any other aged services I would probably just hire a private cleaner.

      • I don’t think that’s a fair generalisation. It really depends between providers. It’s like saying all supermarkets suck because you had a bad experience at one Woolworths store.

It’s also worth mentioning that these in home aged care services are subsidised by the government. For instance the cost to the recipient is means tested and can even be free in some cases. It also connects you with an aged care provider early, who can scale up your services (say shopping, transport to appointments, personal care etc) as or if your needs increase.

If you want to throw $50/hr at a private cleaner instead, go for it.

Source: I work for an in home aged care provider.

        • Yeah - I said it was variable. But being a health professional who refers to and see a lot of people who get aged care services I can tell you I hear a lot of complaints from older people about the quality of the cleaning. If you’re on a package a lot of the providers also charge a ‘case management’ fee or for individual services through HACC though it’s subsidised, the base rate is higher to begin with than many cleaners. So for me if I wanted a bunch of services eg showering, shopping, cleaning etc I’d look at MAC but if it’s cleaning only I’d just pay a private cleaner, there’s cleaners in my area that charge just $25/hr. Each to their own but it’s worth doing comparison between private or MAC services. Another example is some of the meal services for older people which can cost $10-15/meal when they might be better off with youfoodz or decent ready meals from the supermarket.

          • @morse: A lot to unpack in your comment. Let’s just agree to disagree. :)

  • I've got a TINECO. The thing is amazing. Would recommend.

  • I think the Bissell crosswave would be good, if she doesn’t want a robot vac. I reckon you could convince her of the robot vac with mop though, and next she will be telling all her friends about it. If not look at a spray mop Kmart and Bunnings even woolies have them.
