  • Very new to this. What's the difference between ambiance and normal white?

    • +3

Ambiance can go from warm to cool white (change temperature), normal white is just a warm white.

      • Thanks! Any pointer for a starter? Thinking of getting for our house that's building now.

Bought a starter kit ages ago but really has no direction whatsoever

        • You'll have to play with it to find out what sort of lighting you want to have

FYI, this one(bluetooth version) works with/without starter kit(bridge). You can directly connect to your phone/alexa by bluetooth and control it using hue app/alexa. It is a much easier way to start for smart home beginners, in my opinion. (and even for advanced users who don't really feel benefits of zigbee)

Smart lighting was a real game changer for us, especially the ambiance bulbs as some situations call for warm white (evenings, overnight, cold days) and similarly cool white has it's place for increased visibility, daytime lighting, etc. So there is absolutely no way I'd restrict myself to just the warm white variant.

We also have some of the bulbs which can change colour, it's a neat trick at events (green white and red at xmas for instance) and can tie in nicely with other smart appliances via IFTTT so for example if the washing is finished then certain lights change colour.. that way if you don't hear the chime when you later walk into the room you have a visual cue that it's finished.. but in a practical sense it's not at all worth paying extra for.

With these bluetooth ones, you dont need a hub (no need to buy a starter kit) The bulb will connect by bluetooth using the HUE BLUETOOTH app

        • Get ambience down lights when they are on sale for around $50-60 each.
You could then add dinners and motion sensors.
Ambience let’s you have many light hue scenes.

          • @Mahalo: They are on sale now for under $50 at Amazon. Finally bit the bullet and got 11 of them.

            • @HAL: Awesome that’s a really good price!!

              • @Mahalo: I bought around 35 for my new storey build but paid 59

                • @Mahalo: Thoughts on the brightness of these downlights? That's the only thing I have reservations about.

                  • +1

@HAL: They are bright. I have 4 per room

            • @HAL: 47.22 each. Go a create a new deal. That’s best price ever according to Camel3

              • +1

@Mahalo: There's already an existing deal, should prob have that updated.

I would also recommend the hue bridge if you have a house full of down lights and other hue lights. Because they all connect to your hue bridge and the bridge the is the only directly device connected to your modem/mesh.

          • @Mahalo: Do you only need one bridge for, say, 3 bedrooms house or do you need more?

            • +1

@udika: One bridge for up to 50 lights

    • +1

As a starter, I suggest Hue Bridge + Ikea Smart Lights

      Way cheaper

      • I tried that but had trouble with the lights unpairing, while the Hue lights have been rock solid. I've heard the Ikea lights work okay with the Ikea hub though

  • Good price. I have the white already which is more of a yellow light.

The ambiance I found was a bit better as the above comment mentioned you can make the light a bit warmer or cooler.

Hmm my 10 dollar Kogan one has rgb

    • Kogan is WIFI on Tuya only

      • -2

Hmm I can control via echo dot

        • +1

Its still based on tuya Wifi firmware,

Hue is generally based on Zigbee, but now the newer models are Zigbee + bluetooth and so much more reliable firmware/software

  • Back to $44 during checkout.

    • Oh no! I managed to sneak in 5. Probably one more than I actually needed in the end…
Tried the whole ‘other sellers’ thing?

  • Showing at $44 each for me…

  • Yup back to 44 :-(

  • its $44

  • Bought the last one in store at Officeworks. It scanned at $9 bayonet bulb
