  • For what purpose?
    4wd?
    how many people?

    • It is for 2 adults and 2 kids. No there is no 4wd requirement, standard use only
Roof racks just required for simple use, surfboard, kayak etc

The LARGE SUV is required as really do neet the boot size. MID SUV's the boots are just too small

        kayak

        Definitely avoid new RAV4 then

  • Out-of-warranty 100-150K km 5+yo car.

Brand new LDV/GWM/chinese-here ute with 7yr warranty for $36-38K

Triton ute ~$38K base, $44K decent, '10'yr warranty

Yep, LDV D90 for towing, Haval H6 for family use.

5 year / 7 year warranty respectively though beware parts can take long time to arrive should something goes wrong. For example, there's no windscreen for the H6 in the entire country & shipping takes 2 months in current climate.

      • The towbar is primarily to fit a bike rack, there is a posisbility of a small trailer only being used. No caravan or anything etc

      • I agree with Haval H6, but I would avoid LDV. There are too many problems with them.

LDV. Have driven. Just don't. It's like driving a Mitsubishi Triton from 10 years ago.

Your budget is way too low for a large SUV. If you get something for that price, you'll spend a fortune fixing it, because it's going to be old and high Kms. You're also not going to get good fuel efficiency out of a large SUV, even if it's diesel.

You seem to want champagne on a beer budget. You haven't stated your needs (seating, ability, use), but I'd hazard a guess that a wagon or minivan would better fit into your budget.

    • Not sure why people downvoted you.

Most cars are well overpriced these days, particularly large 4WDs.

    • It’s actually not that hard to buy a large SUV for $35k. Buy used.

  • Fuel efficient and large SUV in the same sentence… Interesting concept. Maybe a used Lexus RX450h hybrid?

    Need roof racks…

Well, that counts out the Rav4

  • What's your idea of fuel efficient? My diesel SUV with oversize tyres is averaging mid 9s per 100. Ozbargainers will hate it though.

    • I have a kia sportage and I would call that efficient at around 8.5/9. Perhaps a larger SUV I would have thought 9/10 to be a fair number

      • When you go bigger, frontal area and weight don't go up linearly. Your Sportage would be around 1600kg? Mine is about 2200. Something like a Prado will be heavier again. They are also wider and taller, so more wind resistance, and heavier wheel/tyre combos. All bad for fuel economy.

Most SUVs seem to be gutless horrors as well.

What are you wanting to tow? That may limit your choices.

        • I'm thinking a Kluger fits the requirements except for fuel efficiency.

  • BYD is due to drop their $35k SUV in Australia early next year if you can reserve one (although it is only considered a mid sized SUV)
Looks like a cracker of a car if you can get past the Chinese name
    Here

  • I'd suggest a used Mazda CX-9, which is what we have. Spent a similar amount for a used one, 2016 near top of the range model. Would highly recommend in terms of value and quality.

Edit: the 2016 model is the current range model. 4 cylinder turbo which uses ~10-12L/100km, which is very fuel efficient for its weight.

  • My 2 picks

2014 onwards Toyota Kluger which can be found for around $30k with 60k on the clock.

It's a petrol V6 though, just some of the $5k savings for fuel.

Or 2014 onwards Hyundai Santa Fe Diesel starting from $30k.

Based on your requirements Santa Fe may be the better choice as it's more fuel efficient (but smaller)

    PS.. both drive like boats.

You should be able to get a MY21 Outlander for that amount or an exdemo MY21 with safety pack/roof rails if you shop around. Might be another car to consider on your search. In terms of reliablility, pretty reliable, also new/exdemo with 10 years warranty if you choose to service at a dealer with fixed price servicing. I don't think it's going to be the most fuel efficient around town however. Note: new platforms (Outlander also Kia's sportage this/next year) and stuff so more research would be required.

    • Thanks I will take a look at the Mitsubishi, had considered that car may be worthwhile too

Toyota Kluger - Toyota = reliable, very spacious. Big engine. Very comfortable, Huge inside.

Mitsubishi Pajaro - Big engine. Can be had in turbo diesel (unlike the Kluger). Not fancy, barely changed it during the current model (which I think is the end of the Pajaro). Surely they have ironed out all the bugs, but they don't seem to have been pushing the limits of innovation with it.
