Help Me Design and Choose Security Camera, Alarm System

Hello,
We have just signed up with a builder to build our family home. Help Me Design and Choose Security Camera, Door Cam and Alarm System,

  1. What are things i need to consider
  2. What are the recommended products
  3. How many do you suggest for a double story home (I am thinking 8 cameras)
  4. I have seen Swann that has Heat sense technology, are they any similar or better
  5. Not keen to get the products that has monthly subscription like the ring or cloud services.
  6. Prefer a PoE or wired solution. Not very keen on Solar, battery or wifi solutions
  7. Definitely need the mobile altering capabilities.

First time getting the cameras installed and I may have missed a lot of details. Please help

I saw some reviews of Reolink PoE 810 cameras, eufy Door Cam - are these any good?

For door cam, I am looking to integrate it with Alexa family and get a Echo 15 (product announced, not available yet)
Budget - $1000 - $1500k

Thank you fellow Ozb

The only thing I would suggest is to get cameras that are 5megapixels or better, should be quite affordable now in 2021. Because most of the time things happen only in a small section of the camera viewing angle, you would want to be able to "zoom" in to get a better picture.

Megapixels alone aren't an indicator of how good or bad a security camera will be, particularly at night in low light conditions. For example the majority of the Hikvision PTZ cameras are <5MP, however they have a large sensor size which allows them to perform very well in low light conditions.

The extra MP can be good for "zooming in" an image, however it's not often you need to zoom in on an image if the correct lens is chosen based on the cameras location and what you want to capture.

Keen to see more about this. Exact same scenario for me. New house, 2 storey, etc etc

  • I have seen Swann that has Heat sense technology

This looks a lot like PIR, not mission impossible tech.

What are things i need to consider

Consider if you really need it

  • i have the arlo pro 2 system with a base station …

only problem is, once the subscription stopped, so did the 'smart' notifications (it use to tell me if there was a car, person, animal, delivery or just motion - now it just goes off whenever there's a gust of wind)

  • The Reolink 810A/820A system with the 16 channel NVR got down to $750-760 last month, that would be the best value for sure if it comes up again as it's usually around the $1200 mark. They don't do a smart doorbell though if you wanted to stick with all the same brand.

How many you need depends on the size of the house, blindspots and how much coverage you want. Could possibly get away with one on each corner but if it's a long span, you'll want more. Somewhere between 4 and 8 would probably do most places but having the extra channels on the NVR is always nice to easily add more on.

  • I think this answers the majority of the questions in OPs post: Security Camera Buyers Guide
    Its Aussie specific too.

    1 & 2) Link above answers.
    3) Really depends on the shape of your house, but 6-8 is common for residential. On double story, just make sure its mounted on the ground level eaves. Otherwise it can be defeated by a baseball cap if its too high.
    4) "Heat sense technology" is just PIR. Its actually worse than Pixel AI.
    5) Link above answers
    6) Wired POE is always best
    7) Most options have mobile alterting.

  • Great post, looking forward to some feedback as I'm in similar situation.

At the moment I'm looking at Hikvision 8MP (8 Cameras) from eBay roughly $1200

    Hikvision DoorBell Roughly $500

and Alarm System BOSCH Series 3000 again Roughly $500
