Original Coupon Deal

G'day guys

My test kit has expired and was giving me odd results so I was hunting the best deal.

I had my local pet barn price match the price before coupon ($53 ish) but then found the coupon making it cheaper.
eBay and petbarn have this kit for around $70-90

API Gh Kh Hardness Test Kit Freshwater is also very cheap at $17.99 + delivery, compared to petbarn's $29.99 and ebay's $25ish

Cheers.

Solid pricing and a must have

Yeah interestingly enough last time I purchased one $55 seemed to be the normal price on ebay etc.

  • Really good price delivered. This is over $70 normally, even when discounted. My current kit is a few years old so its good to get fresh chems.

  • Tetra EasyStrips 6-in-1 Aquarium Test Strips 100-Pieces are $31.50 for S&S. Amazon

      Strips are trash

  • This is a good price but it is well known to be inaccurate for nitrite.
I do have this kit but I also have the JBL labs to more accurately measure nitrite (Sera is also another good option)

  • Recommended for goldfish? tetra?

    • Any freshwater and even saltwater

  • How often do u guys test? What are you looking for?

I change my water often (150L tank with 4 gold fish & fluval 407) and have an expired test kit that I used to use when I started 4yrs ago but these days…i don't bother at all.

Waiting on a 5ft tank upgrade to rehome the fish and not sure whether i would bother with testing water??

I add fraction water conditioner with changes but yeah, rarely test.. Was more so when everything was new.

    • Whenever I have a fish drop off I always check, I also have to monitor kh and ph with co2 injection.

Also handy to have with power outages etc to make sure your cycle hasn't crashed.

      Currently stocking a new tank

      • Interesting, I've always thought the way to rectify is things like not over stocking or a water change.

So if testing just tells me to water change, I'm doing that anyways?

I don't even add salt (it might be part of the fraction)

    • Depends on your individual setup and experience.

1,000+ litre aquaponic system here, so no water changes :)
I usually test every 4-6 weeks for an established stable system or more often as needed like weekly for fish health issues / big system changes etc.

      • Holy moly 1000+!!!

Im scared with getting the 5ft x2x2 tank lol. So no water changes ever?? Think i need to look into aquaponics!

Yep, usually no water changes done in aquaponics unless something is majorly wrong,

Or you get huge rain fall and need to reduce water level but it's more likely you need to add water occasionally due to loss from transpiration and evaporation, especially during the summer heat and growing some aquaponic goodness :D

@Bohlen: Epic and inspired. My goldfish are becoming monsters so they eventually will need to go live outside in such a setup. I couldn't risk such a tank leading inside lol.

+Anything that stops me doing water changes and gives back some food is 👌

            • @Kammi: Another option to considerably reduce the need for water changes is to use an algae scrubber.
I have recently built an upflow algae scrubber based off the Santa Monica HOG 2x for my 5ft African Cichlid tank and this will massively reduce the need for water changes.
It's very similar to aquaponics, using plants (or algae) to naturally filter the water and pull out excess nutrients.

  • Got $5 test kits from Pool and Spa warehouse in last 2 years Christmas Sale.
