You can get solar panels to offset electricity usage if you go electric. If you go gas, you can have ever increasing gas-prices, I guess?

*If you happen to own/run a gas refinery, this may be a valid reason to go gas. Maybe.

I would go with solar pool heating as you just pay for the water pump to run during the day to pump the water around the system once it's installed.

Depends what OP is looking for. If they are looking to take the edge off and maybe extend their swim season by an extra month or two, then sure go for solar. But if they are looking for a warm pool year round, solar ain't going to cut it. Especially in VIC.

Solar array heating (the type that pumps water up to the roof to heat).
Back that up with solar panels to power the pump and you're done. I pay nothing to heat my pool.

Gas will always need gas, and it’s going up in price. Electric can be run off the sun.

    Solar…

all depends on how warm you want the pool also..

if you have the right roof positioning solar heating is good.

during summer i can get the pool close to 40 degrees..and in winter can't make it go pass 24.

heat loss at night is what will kill it.

    • if you don't plan on swimming in winter solar heating is great…
    • if you have an excessive solar array system then, that's a no brainer. (heat in the morning to swim in the afternoon.)

no heating will be instant will take many hours to heat a pool of water,

Gas has gone from being one of the cheapest heating fuels to one of the most expensive. If I could get off gas entirely I would.

If you can install solar PV and heat off that it would be best. Otherwise offpeak electricity overnight and a pool blanket

    Gas is stupid

I had a solar pool heating system which took up a fair amount of roof space because ideally it needs to be the equivalent of the pool's surface area.
One year a flock of corellas landed on the roof and nibbled the solar pipes. When I turned the pump on, I had a thousand fountains on the roof πŸ˜‚
The pool guy suggested installing wire mesh over the repaired pipes or just putting a rubber 2m brown snake on the roof. I went with the latter because it cost around $40. The dumb corellas never landed on the roof again πŸ‘
