[Telstra] if you do not have NextG device, you cannot get 3G starting Aug 31

I received a sms from Telstra saying that i cannot get 3g unless i have a NextG device starting 31 Aug.
I use a iphone4 from telstra and i am sure it is not nextg compatible.

so what are the implication? are they going to release me from my contract? give me a nextg phone?

  • Doesn't NextG refer to their 850Hz 3g network? I guess phones that are not capable of accessing HSPDA/3G at 850Hz won't have access to 3g.

iphone4, according to gsmarena is able to access the 850Hz 3g networks so I think you're fine.

  • hmm.. it seems the iphone 4 does support 850hz. problem solve.

some sales guy at telstra gave me the impression that iphone4 does not support nextg. he was trying to sell me some other phone they had in stock.

    • Yeah I totally agree with this, all iphones since the 3G support 850mhz HSDPA. You are totally ok.

    • "some sales guy at telstra gave me the impression that"

basically you fell for a pressure sales technique. how to sell someone something they not only dont need or want, but make them go away thinking they did the right thing… buying a new ifone in your case when the old one will perfectly do the job you want.

      • i didnt fall for it. I wanted the iphone4 and they didnt have it. they were trying to flog me the galaxy s. I stuck to what I wanted :P

  • So basically what is happening is that Telstra is "switching off" its 2100MHz signal come August. Any phone that works on the 850MHz band will be unaffected. If your phone isn't, you will still be able to make phone calls and send text messages, you just won't get the faster data speeds that you get when using the 3g network.

  • Telstra aren't switching off 2100Mhz, they are still using it to fill in their 850Mhz network.

They're only saying to people that they're switching off 850Mhz because they're shutting down 3GIS.

  • Telstra are actually doing the opposite, they're upgraded the 2100Mhz band site to give faster speeds.
I think it's if you don't have a NextG (850Mhz) device in Aug you'll be able to get NextG speeds on your 2100Mhz device…..

    • I don't think so. I got a letter saying that I'll only be able to use the internet and downloads on 2g speeds because my LG Optimus 7 doesn't work on the 850Mhz network. As a contract with Vodafone(?) has ended and they are not renewing it.
