Purchased a Nintendo Switch Game via JB Hi-Fi Click and Collect but The Case Was Empty. Advice Appreciated!

Hi guys! I purchased a game via JB HIFI's click and collect earlier today, but when I checked the case at home there was no cartridge. It was an empty display case with the price attached and everything.

For the record, there was no tamper seal affixed to the box. I didn't see the C&C clerk place the game cartridge inside the case at the time of pickup, so I assumed it was inside to begin with. I assumed nothing was amiss since the invoice slip was wrapped around the case itself.

I plan on chatting with the staff tomorrow, but I'd appreciate any advice/similar stories on the matter/how I should escalate if they decline to provide the game cartridge.

I plan on chatting with the staff tomorrow,

Do this first. If they come back and decline or aren't a help, then come back here, but there's no real reason as to why they should decline, unless they think that you stole it and you want another cartridge.

You tell them what happened and they should deal with it with no problems.

    • Thanks! This is my first time dealing the with the issue, so I was a tad anxious about the ways it could go wrong :')

Second this. I would imagine they would see they have an extra cartridge in their inventory to confirm this. Talk to them ASAP

Gotcha - thanks for bringing up inventory! It didn't occur to me.

Pleasure. Let us know how it works out!

@Lanushi: Everything worked out! I was polite, explained the situation, and the cashier was super understanding. :D

Was the game in shrink and new?

      Switch games are rarely sealed.

Really? I usually ask for a sealed one otherwise I won't accept em.

It seems that upon release the games won't be shrink wrapped, maybe so Nintendo can get them out on time. After a period of time though (months?) they might come shrink wrapped.

eg. Got BOTW on launch - not shrink wrapped. Got another copy a month ago - shrink wrapped.

That might be how it seems, but it's not how it is. It largely comes down to product localisation that happens on-shore. There's only a handful of Nintendo first party games that carry the AUS suffix on the game card. The rest are EUR cards shipped here in cover-less game boxes ready for the OFLC cover to be inserted.

I have a two day one copies of Zelda BoTW. The standalone copy was unsealed while the one in the collector's edition (CE) - complete with OFLC cover - had a seal. That, for me, is still one of life's little mysteries.

It used to be that buying the CE of a Nintendo first party title in Australia was the best way to ensure a sealed game. But as recently as Friday, with the SMT V Fall of Man Premium Edition, the game in the CE box was unsealed.

I'm not that hardline, but I always ask (at JB, EB and BigW) if there is a nearby store with >1 copy as there is a better chance of getting one sealed.

EB Games is pretty good with ordering-in a sealed copy from the warehouse if you ask them (and it's available, of course).

Nintendo first party Switch games are rarely sealed in Australia. This is because, since late 2018, Nintendo AU/NZ has done the cover localisation on-shore and they simply don't bother to run the games through a Y-fold sealer.

Third party titles are generally shipped from the respective distributors. Of the third party OFLC-rated titles in my collection, 85% of the new and unplayed games are factory sealed. Those brand third party games that are NOT factory sealed were generally acquired from JB or EB Games (last units shucked for display) or The Gamesmen (shinkwrapped-sealed after inspection before shipping).

I had this happen with a PlayStation Game - go back the next day, be polite and have all the stuff [game, bag receipt] with you.

      Thanks a ton! It's good to know this isn't a once-off occurrence

This is the time of the Chrismas Casual. Id be polite about the situation.

They could possibly check the security footage to confirm.

I once bought a LE of a game with statue etc that was 50% off at EB and chucked it on my shelf as I usually did. About six months later I decided to open up all my recent games and redeem any DLC that may be inside and lo and behold, there was no game inside the LE.

Went back to EB with my receipt in tow and told them what had happened. The staff called up their support centre for advice and was instructed to check the discs in their drawer against the inventory on the computer. Sure enough, there was an extra disc there which they gave to me.
