WA E-Scooter Laws about to Change - 25kph on Bike Paths and Roads. Yeow!

From Mark McGowan Facebook page a few hours ago….

With the use of eRideables in WA continuing to rise, we want to make sure the State’s road rules reflect the new technology and keep all Western Australians safe.

From 4 December, new laws on the use of eRideables – which include e-scooters, electric unicycles, electric skateboards, electric roller-skates, one-wheel electric scooters and hoverboards - will come into effect.

These laws will bring our State into line with other jurisdictions.
These laws for riders include:

  • Maximum speeds of 25km/h on bike paths and local roads, and 10km/h on footpaths and pedestrian areas
  • Requirement to give way to pedestrians and keep to the left of oncoming riders
  • 16 year age minimum
  • Use of helmets, lights and reflectors
  • The same mobile phone and drink and drug driving rules as for motor vehicle drivers

    Common sense prevails.

Bloody brilliant. The more states that finally get on board with legalising and integrating electric scooters and other PMDs the better. I’m in Victoria so hopefully we finally legalise them soon.

I'm in Vic and ride a regular pushbike to work. I see electric scooters every day, and pass heaps. Makes no sense that me on a bike is fine but an electric scooter is illegal!!

      • 100% agree. I’ve only seen a couple of people using e scooters but I guess it’s just the area I live in.

  • Still illegal in nsw yeh?

    • Yes , and you can cop 5 different fines if caught on one depending on the circumstances , over $2.5k+ in actual monetary fines.

1.Using an Unlicensed Vehicle For Class - Class C/R/Lr
      2.Using an Uninsured Motor Vehicle
3.Using an unregistered motor vehicle on road
      4.Driving on footpath
5.Motor Bike Ride Not Wear/Secure Fit Approved Helmet (you can dodge this fine if you wear a helmet but if caught on one you will get done for the above 4 guaranteed)

I don't know anyone personally who has copped all of them but i am pretty sure 1 of the fines actually carries demerit points , so unless you got points to lose and money to burn its probably not a good idea.

At least not at this moment in time anyway.

    • yep. But my suburb Wolli Creek is excluded. Come and visit to see why.

  • Nice. Use one daily is WA and this fits in exactly.

  • Slowly getting there, I think these laws are about spot on for the time being.
