Air Conditioner - Tips Needed

Hey All, with summer on it's way, I thought this would be a good topic for many of us, but in particular myself as I need to get an air conditioner.

More specifically, I want to know:

a) what power air conditioner do I need? I live on a single floor apartment, which is apparently 61 square metres (although I really only need to keep about half of that size cool).
b) what type of air conditioner should I get?
c) what brand air conditioner should I get?
d) what's the best/cheapest way to get it installed? I'm considering Airtasker.

My apparent is top storey (3rd level up), gets a fair bit of sun and I'm in Sydney (incase climate matters).

Chur

Edit: I should add, whilst I want to make sure I get decent value, I'm willing to pay a bit more money for higher quality rather than get something that's half-assed.
Also, wondering if I can claim purchase as tax deduction if I'm WFH?

  • Fujitsu / Daikin

    • Thank you. Fujitsu looked good from what I could see, but I'll add Daikin in my search too.

No worries! I'm certainly no expert but put a bit of time into research when we had ours installed. I ended up going with Fujitsu.

    • Wouldn't want to touch a Daikin unless you're in industrial/SME settings with techie available. I'd advise Fujitsu or Panasonic, MHE is also good but a couple of models lately has rattling issue with vent.

      • MHE

        ME or MHI?

MHI is better of the two.

That being said I have ME in every room of my rental property and they haven't missed a beat / no tenant complaints.

Check if you need strata approval first.

Being on the top floor you may be lucky and get the external box roof mounted, so it doesn't take up balcony space.

    • Thank you. I've just emailed my strata to double check that after reading this.

Mitsubishi heavy industry are great value for the quality. Not same as Mitsubishi electrical. Fujitsu and Daikin were recommended by the installer too. He said don’t buy samsung or lg, they are crap.
For 60sqm top floor in Sydney you need min 5kw. I’d go 6-7kw for slightly more money. You aircon will achieve temp easier and on lower fan setting, which is quieter.

    • Thank you. Happy to get the higher kw if it's going to be more efficient.

  • First question to look at is do you need body corp permission and where can you place the external unit. How many room in the 61sqm you need to cool? But generally you'll be alright with a 5kw unit.

    • I don't need body corp permission but I haven't checked whether I can place on the roof, which I will check with body corp (I can definitely place on the balcony).

      • If on the roof expect extra cost as they need to install sump pump, last time I checked it was $300 on the guy i used.

  • If you would like warranty coverage you would need a licensed installer, with an ABN
Strata would be interested in this also.

    • The wall mounted ones are good too.

    • Electric or Heavy Industries?

Do you own the flat or rented, Strata is very conscious when installing aircon due to the aesthetic of the building as well noise level from the outside unit. Always get it installed by a professional installer since they know their job and also it's on lvl 3. you need to seal your room I mean you cannot air-cool the living room if you have an open plan kitchen as it will choke up the internal conder grill with cooking fumes and heat from the oven will nullify the effect of cooling.

    • I own the flat. My kitchen is open unfortunately. Good things to keep in mind.

My townhouse is 40sqm per floor (3 floors). Double brick with concrete floors.
Ground floor is kitchen/dining & lounge. The lounge and kitchen have the stairs in-between which slightly sub-divides the 2 areas. The stairs are like a chimney.

I have a 5kw Daikin split system in the lounge area. It works really well and doesn't "strain itself". It cost a few dollars a day to run all day.

Cooking in the kitchen hasn't caused any dramas.
