Help Looking for a Highschool Laptop for 2022 - Budget $1000

Hello everyone my son will go to highschool next year and I was wondering if you could help me decide what to laptop to buy?

The school has informed us about the mimimum specs required which are

  • 2.4Ghz and 5GHz
  • 802.11 "a", "g", "n", "ac" and /or "ax" wireless standards
  • 125GB storage and 8GB RAM
  • camera and microphone
  • good battery life
  • lightweight

Don't know if buying an expensive model is necessary. Thanks in advance

  • Pretty standard specs nowadays. Important bit is what's your budget?

    • Its been a while since i bought a laptop so don't know if a $1000 budget is okay. Don't want to spend $1500 as I don't know if my son will take care of it. haha

  • Don't know if buying an expensive model is necessary

Definitely not: lots of really good options from Dell or HP for under $1000. Especially since it's going to be in a school backpack that's gonna be thrown around quite a bit.

    • thank I will look into it.

Go into Office Works or Hardley Normal and have a look at the laptops to see what you like and then come back with the ones you like to see what people think. There are way too many options.

Ask if they use a laptop in yr7 as my son has not had to take his laptop to school once this year, so it was a waste to get as he uses my old laptop at home.

Please don't… What is a $1500 laptop there could be a $1,000 laptop elsewhere, and OP might not even look at them.

$1k at OW or HN would get you an SD screen etc, and the sales guy will say it's the bees knees…

    • I believe it differs from school to school or state to state. For example, one NSW school I know required Yr 7 students to have a BYOD device. However, 2 years prior, it was only Yr 9 and above that had to have a laptop on hand.

      • yes my son is also BYOD

  • A few here around the $1k mark which fit the needs

    Otherwise browse recent deals

Quite a few recent posts regarding BYOD for high school — please check the past threads.

    • sorry and thank you for the list.

  • is it much better to buy a laptop this Black friday sale?

    • This deal ends on Saturday night, so I guess just be ready to go either way?

  • Possibly the same one recommended each day for the last month or 3

  • Are chromebooks OK with you? That would be my choice.

Some really good deals on the Lenovo education store at the moment - got a 14 inch ideapad with Ryzen7, 16GB RAM, 512SSD for les than $1000 a few weeks ago and was delivered in 4 days. You will need to create an account using his school email address

Was cheaper than on the ebay 20% off

    • SD screens…

  • Check the size, many of the deals are for 15.6 in, which will prob be too big and heavy

Factor in a few $$ for a hardshell case to put it in before it gets chucked in the school bag

I bought a second hand i7 ACER with the above specs for my highschool daughter for $120.

12 months later and still going strong. if she drops it and it breaks then I'm $120 down,

plenty of decent laptops on market place.

  • I would look at a Lenovo Ideapad Slim 5 14" through the education portal. Can get the Ryzen 5 5500U/8gb ram/512gb ssd for about $872 if you use the code EDUCOMM. Can get right on $800 if a Ryzen 3 will be sufficient (not really sure).

Just keep an eye on the shipping dates if you customise anything, as some state 7 weeks shipping (although likely less in reality).

I got laptops for both my kids from renewd.com.au. They are refurbished and around half the price of a new one. You can also get warranties for them.
So far now I've bought 4 laptops from them and never had a problem, 1 was a Surface Pro and 1 a Surface laptop, the other 2 just std high end HP laptops.
They often have specials with $300 off.
Just look up the min specs you need and compare the price of a new one to these.
Kids don't look after things, or worse other kids have no respect to other peoples properties, so I don't see the sense in spending thousands on something that has a risk of being damaged easily.

  • Any deals for high school use atm ? My son's Acer aspire died and need a laptop urgently today

    • Just got an email from Renewd; 30% off listed prices, if that helps.

      • thanks for reply. Since my kid's laptop is broke down, kind of urgent to buy today only from a store

        • Fair enough, they do pretty quick courier deliveries, though
