Samsung Note LOCKED - eGlobal Digital Cameras

Hi everyone, I bought a Samsung Note last week through eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au as per the deal posted on Ozbargain. I received my Note yesterday and I couldn't be happier but there's a problem - its network Locked. The item description said it was unlocked but when I put my Optus and 3 simcards, it keeps asking me for the 'Network Control Key' code. I can use pretty much all functions except calling and texting. I raised a support ticket on their website yesterday, but seems like it will only get answered on Monday, if ever.

Is anyone else in the same boat? I tried googling but most websites charge more than $30 to unlock the new models. Furthermore, I don't even kow what network the phone is locked to - the user manual supplied was in one of the European languages. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Don't bother raising the service ticket.
Just use the livechat facility as soon as they are open.
I was normally able to talk to someone in 10-15 minutes.
I bought a Note from them as well and had no issues.

    • Thanks for the response, I too thought the same. Let's hope they would help me and for the time being my HTC Desire HD is going strong. Kind of wierd to see an Asian website not operating on the weekend.

      • Nice phone, DHD is getting ICS soon so you could hold on to it a bit longer. How's the note feel in comparison? Major upgrade?

        • +1

DHD is pretty good phone except that now it feels way too small as Note is much bigger and wider. DHD can pretty much do anything that Note does, but the Note is very powerful in terms of specs and battery life. Using the popular 'Quadrant Benchmark' from the market my DHD received a 1300 score while the Note was at almost 3900, streets ahead of the average score of Nexus (2000) and Galaxy tab (2400) in that terms.

  • I'll be interested to hear the outcome. I'm guessing that because it's networked locked it will probably contain gloatware from the company it is locked to, which is NOT what you paid for.

If you end up having to ship the phone back to them please be sure to use a service with reliable tracking. I can tell you from experience that Australia Post Express is not adequate. I found out when I had to return a phone to DWI (these people under a different name) that an Express satchel posted in a yellow box is often only scanned at the receiving post office prior to delivery, and possibly not before.

  • Agree with Geewhizz if you use express post >post it at a post office and get them to scan the barcode<
that way you have more proof "not infallible tho" use platinum for that i guess.

( have got refunds from auspost, for i had this extra proof of posting date ie: next day delivery )

EDIT: sorry new replacement satchels -not refunds

    • Mr Aligator has already indicated that he has no interest in returning the phone, but just a quick not to clarify:

if you use express post >post it at a post office and get them to scan the barcode

To be specific, hand it over the counter, do not post it in the box, even if at the actual post office, and request for it to be scanned if they don't automatically do it.

IF you have to resort to getting a refund via paypal, they will require tracking with a signature - regular express post does not provide a signature.

In my case I'd returned the phone well before I had to involve paypal, so at that stage wasn't aware that I'd be needing a signature. I assumed because I'd been able to track items that i'd posted express before via the aust post site that this would be quite adequate - didn't know at that point about the company I was dealing with though. Fortunately for me, they'd acknowledged having received it and kept promising refunds ….. "within 48 hours", "by the end of business today" blah blah blah.

When I finally had to resort to getting paypal involved, the company claimed to them that they had not received my parcel!!!! So I went to the Aust Post tracking site and entered my tracking number, only to find it had NEVER been scanned into the system. That was when I was told by the post office here that it is standard practice for it to only be scanned at the delivering post office, and anything other than that is simply a bonus. In this case the delivering post office hadn't even bothered, so I could have been up sh** creek. Fortunately PayPal got it sorted though - lesson learned. MUST HAVE SIGNATURE!

      • Sounds very ugly, I hope to get it sorted asap and move on. If I have to resort to sending the phone back, I will keep your advice in mind. Btw, did you get a full refund and how long did it take? I had a 10 minute chat with the rep on their site but he seems to be clueless and is giving generic standard responses ('we will look in to it', etc) The hardest part here is to bloody find out what network it is locked to - as all the websites which unlock the phones need to know what network it is locked to before proceeding. No bloatware and also no defined 'Access Point' on the phone seems very strange for a locked phone.
After a lot of research, I have come across this market app which looks very promising but requires the phone to be rooted, which I will consider at a later stage, if all else fails.

As mentioned, I eventually had to escalate a paypal claim to get a refund. Once I'd done that it was just a couple of days. I'd read horror stories regarding claiming a refund through paypal, and was dreading it, but it was all very straight forward and painfree (apart from the point where I realised my tracking number had never been processed by Aust Post, but that had nothing to do with paypal themselves.)

I'm sure even a credit card reversal would have taken much longer.

  • Thank you foryour input guys. To be honest I am not really interested in sending the phone back as that would be a lot of hassle, all I want is an unlock code. Surprisingly, there is no bloatware installed which makes it hard to know what network it is locked to. Will keep you guys updated.
Have paid through Paypal using credit card so I should be covered.

That WILL make it hard - hope you get it sorted quickly.

  • any progress?

  • Not yet. I had a chat with them this morning and the rep said they will get back to me today, which I highly doubt. I am going to have to chase them up again in a few hours.

  • Ok, so good news. I just had a chat with a rep (his initials were CW) and he was much helpful and understanding than the one I had in the morning (initials MS). At first, he insisted it is the sim card problem but when I told him that I have already tried 3 different simcards from different service providers, he agreed to look in to it and get me the unlock code. I had to wait 15-20 minutes to get the code but it all turned out well as my phone was successfully unlocked. Again thank you people for your suggestions and advice on this issue.

awesome, that's great! good to know they resolved it for you in the end without too much fuss.

      Yay! Happy to hear it.

  • I have just had the exact same problem, I wish I would have seen this earlier.
are the codes all the same?

    • Hi just noticed your comment.

Did you buy it from Eglobal as well? These guys are very inconsistent - some receive locked while others receive unlocked phones. Just contact them first thing in the morning when the online chat resumes, and insist for the code. And no, the codes would be different for each IMEI number.
