Is PayPal Safe to Use for Selling a Laptop?

Hi guys,

I am listing a laptop on the Facebook marketplace. The buyer initially like to pay by cash when meeting up this weekend but he just dropped a message saying he'd like to pay by PayPal. Would it be safe for me as the seller?

Cheers.

Are you still meeting up with him in person? If so, do the PayPal transaction on site. Don't pay before you meet him.

      OP is the seller :)

    • Thanks but I'm the seller and ain't going to pay him anything.

Go with cash… sounds sus for your buyer to change payment method now.

    • Thank you.

Just make the meetup place somewhere close to an ATM or bank. Like within a shopping center. They can withdraw their money so long as they're carrying their cards on them

        • Thanks.

Almost nothing is 100% safe though I think cash is a much safer bet, especially if you meet in the right place.

    • Thanks.

I wouldn't do it. The seller can easily make a "never received" claim and you wouldn't be able to provide proof that it was handed over

You mean the buyer can easily make a "never received" the item right?

        Oops, yeah that's right

        • Cheers :)

    Cash or GTFO.

    • Got it. Thanks

The buyer can make a claim. If the claim is unsuccessful they can still get a credit card chargeback. Insist on cash.

    • Thank you.

  • Meet in an RSL club in the coffee shop and do the trade their.
They less likely to do something dodgy in the middle of a club with cameras everywhere.
Harder for them to run out as well.

    • Good point. Thanks.

    Cash all the way.
You’ll regret taking Paypal when the buyer raises a dispute in 5 months time saying your laptop is faulty.

Cash always > not PayPal <

I don't accept Paypal, it's ripe for chargeback scams where Paypal will almost always side with the buyer. The most common scams are fraudulent charges, item not received or item not as described.

    CASH CASH CASH

Just say you don't have PayPal cos of the fees. Happy to do payid.

  • paypal friends and family is fine.

    it's basically cash
    no fees.
no buyer protection -i.e. buyer can't claim item never received or faulty item, etc

Nothing paid by credit card is "basically cash".

Forget about what PayPal says about "friends & family". The buyer can walk into the bank and lodge unauthorized transaction complaint if paid by credit card and they will get their money back.

The only way how "friends & family" is basically cash is if buyer's PayPal account is funded by direct debit, not credit card. And you won't know that as seller.

PayPal's dispute process will favour the buyer unless you can offer objective proof of exchange (and I cannot think of anything that you can do that would meet this criteria).

It is why many merchants who accept PayPal do not offer PayPal as a payment option for Click and Collect. The reason being that for seller protection, they need a special contractual arrangement with PayPal Australia or else they are happy to take the risk.

If they're going to meet you to pick up the laptop then you better make it cash (in a safe, public place, of course). It's weird they want to meet you in person but have decided to change to pay you via PayPal. It would be a different story if you were mailing the item.
