Anyone Used an LG OLED in a Bright Lit Room?

We’ve been looking at purchasing an LG C1/CX for quite some time. Our apartment has more or less a wall of windows to the right (from ceiling to about 1m off the floor), and small wall (sliding doors) behind where we plan to put the tv. Meaning - a lot of natural light.

Our main tv consumption is from 7pm onwards. It’s rare we use the tv during the day. We also have a shade blind, and block out blind for every window we could just pull down. Light still slightly seeps through. Content mainly consumed is Console gaming, Netflix/stan tv shows and occasional movies.

For those with an OLED… have you had much of an issue with light seeping through? Do you see it being a problem for us? Do you have your OLED in a bright room?

Reddit suggests avoid OLED and go for a QLED but I find the QLED panels look quite saturated/blooming.

Cheers.

  • What TV do you currently have?

    • Samsung Q7 55". Great TV - just made the 'mistake' of not going for a 65" when I had the chance.

  • As you are using the TV after 7PM (mostly after sunset), it will be fine. The screen is perfectly visible for the occasional use in daylight hours. It's not like trying to use a phone in direct sunlight.

The TV is so clear that I find it distracting to have the image reflected off the windows at night, kinda like having multiple TV's in the same room.

Careful with HUDs while console gaming.

    • Yep mostly after sunset. It'll be the occasional daytime viewing.. which I could always draw the blinds down if I'm that concerned.

When viewing at night - is it distracting with internal lights on? We rarely watch TV with all the lights off..

ah gotcha. I find that it is fine with internal lights on, but my internal light is around 5m away from the TV. I do not see any light reflection on the TV.

  • That sounds like a problem to me as I get bothered by lights unless I place them carefully. You might need to get a brighter TV technology.

I don't think burn in is a problem with modern OLEDS. I've been using a B8 main monitor for a couple of years now for work and I've yet to see anything.

  • The glossy screen is more of an issue than the brightness. It’s plenty bright in a light filled room, just that there is lots of reflection. You will be fine with the blinds down during daylight hours.

  • I have an A80J which is essentially the same screen. For your situation, I would recommend getting a non OLED TV. For a dark room with 4K input, the OLED image is great, but for a brighter room like yours, the images will look washed out and a bit dull.

It’s fine. I have a massive window right to the left and can still see the image.
Of course not as well but still ok. Reflections are more of an issue, which would likely be the case on any tv

    • Yep good to hear. I suppose I'm happy with the compromise of reflections during the day time, and when Im too lazy to wind down the blind, for better quality during the evening when the tv is mostly used.

Silly Q but do you face much issue with reflection during night time watching? I imagine only from internal lights that are on, right?

      • None really I’ve noticed. Yeah lights off nearby

We have a 65CX and live in an apartment. It is wall-mounted and is next to a floor-to-ceiling window/sliding door (lots of natural light). We mainly use it for Netflix/streaming and occasionally gaming.

It took some time to transition as it wasn't as bright as the previous TV (8 yr old Samsung) but found it to be an excellent TV. As others have mentioned, the reflections was the biggest issue. So for day time watching, we usually have the sun shade / blind half way down with the picture setting to VIVID (brightest standard TV setting). Which we found more than adequate for daytime viewing. Note reading the forums, it's recommended to use VIVID setting sparingly , as it increases the chance of the dreaded OLED burn in.

Since you're watching from 7pm onwards, you will not have any issues at all. I usually, have it set to Film Maker Mode (bright room) for early evening. And then change to Film Maker Mode (Dark Room) for late evening. Watched Spider-man into the spider-verse and the visuals were just breathtaking.

    Hope this helps. !

This was incredibly helpful - thank you! I think reading online suggest daytime viewing as poor, in comparison to night time viewing.. which is obvious. And we are OK with that compromise given primary viewing is in the evening.

    Absolutely it is.

Even day time viewing isn’t as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Its more than acceptable !

  • I have LG 55" C7 and wall mounted next to the window. Regardless of day or night time, it is excellent. I can't imagine the new C1. Newer models of LG OLEDs have pixel burn protections such as auto dimming based on pixel temp, tv logo detection etc. So it is not as easy as before (like on my one). Regardless, for me all the way OLED until something better comes out.

  • Update - I bought the OLED. Wow. What a beautiful tv. No issues in the evening. Love it. Thanks everyone!

      Yeh, no regrets.

Forgot to tell that you must keep direct sunlight from hitting the TV. Direct sunlight will affect the screen even if the TV isn't switched on. Keep the sliding door/wall shut during those times. Treat the oled like a gremlin: do not let it come in contact with water, do not expose to sunlight, do not feed after midnight.

      • Haha. Good tip, will do. Thanks mate
