Laptop screen resolution vs external monitor resolution

I'm looking at the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 (https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-laptops/xps-13-2-in-1-l…) and it has a screen resolution of 1920 x 1200. I want to connect an external QHD monitor (Dell 2721DGF).

  1. I can't find specs for this that would confirm that this XPS can drive the external monitor at QHD. My understanding is that it probably would be able to, the laptop's screen resolution is independent of the max resolution it can drive for external monitors, and th XPS has Iris Xe graphics so I guess it should be able to handle that no worries, but I can't find confirmation online and chat and phone support are closed (despite them meant to be available today). How can I confirm this?

  2. I think I need to get a dock or hub as well so I can hook up the external monitor, keyboard and mouse as well as power the laptop. The WD19TBS dock is out of stock, so I've looked at some third party hubs and it seems that some of them at least restrict the resolution and/or refresh rate for connected monitors. Is this always the case when going through a dock or hub?

  3. I'm not understanding Thunderbolt. What options do I have connecting an XPS with USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports to the 2721DGF with Display Port and HDMI ports, including how the different options affect refresh rate (if at all)?

I've spent today trying to read up and understand what's current now for laptops, and am struggling to cram it all in in time to take advantage of deals. What seemed to be a good deal compared to the Surface options I was initially looking at is now becoming a lot more complicated than I thought, any help gratefully received.

    Maximum output: 7680x4320@60Hz

Also I don't think you need to blow $400 on a dock for what you want to do.

    • Thank you for that! That's great, and good to know I don't need a dock.

You can get a thunderbolt/usb-c to hdmi or displayport adapter for $20-30 or less if you look around. You don't need a full blown dock

Yes, good idea. The laptop has only 2 USB-C ports, so was trying to determine how to use them to suppoort external monitor, external keyboard, mouse and power at the same time.
