A80J 77" & LG C1 77" Who's Used Both?

I'm after some help on these two OLEDs as I'm looking to buy either or today. I watch movies/sports 95% of the the time and potentially would game on it in the future.

I realize that with the above people would most likely recommend the A80J as it is slightly better for my use case.

The issue I'm having is I can get the C1 for $4,500 and the A80J for $5,500.

For people out there who have used both will I notice a $1,000 better picture for my use case with the Sony or am I better off with the C1 even though I don't game.

Thanks for your help!

Both are amazing TVs and probably the best in this price segment. If there is no price difference, I would take A80J. But for a $1000 difference, get the C1 instead. I got the C1 and it is bloody beautiful for movies. I think it will be very difficult to even spot the difference between both as a normal consumer. Save the $1000 and buy yourself a PS5/XBSX instead.

Full comparison from HDTVTest. But note that A80J just implemented VRR but apparently there are some issues. However this doesnt impact you as movies is your primary use case.

In summary, for gaming go C1, for movies go A80J. Is it worth $1000 over the C1? I dont know, probably not for me. But if you are a hardcore movie buff, maybe.

      • Disclaimer: I own an LG C1, but have not viewed an A80J outside a store demo environment.

Going by that video alone, I think paying $1k more for an A80J would be a hard sell. The A80J does have an image quality edge (although not in every aspect, eg Vincent seems to prefer the LG near black performance for example) and of course the C1 is a much better choice for gaming.

Even if I wasn't a gamer at all, I'd struggle to justify another $1000 for an A80J. Given I am a gamer, the C1 was always the right choice for me.

I had the LG CX which is comparable in picture quality to the C1 and I recently got the A90J which has the same new XR processor as the A80J and I have to say that the picture quality, especially for 4k content blew me away the first time I watched it. It's hard to explain but it made the picture have more 3D depth, like you can reach in and grab things from it.

I also watch movies and game more then yourself so it was even harder for me to decide not to go with the C1, I was also tossing up if the extra money was worth it but it made me feel a lot better about my decision once I saw the picture quality, it really is something else. The wife was even more skeptical about the purchase but now keeps telling me I made the right call whenever she uses it.

    • A90J doesn't come in 77" and it runs a huge price premium over the CX/C1, and even more than the G1 with the evo panel that's a fairer comparison.

With that said it is the big daddy when it comes to movie watching

  • I would prefer the a80j. Can you tell me how to get for 5.5?

  • I own a C1 and would find it hard to justify an extra 1k for the a80j. Side by side in store they both look brilliant. Like you I use my TV for sports and movies for the most part and I am very happy with my purchase.

One thing to note however, the C1 uses WebOS which does not currently have Kayo or Paramount+ apps - frustrating if you are using those for your sports fix.

I doubt you would notice a $1000 difference. But you have to ask yourself, will you have buyers remorse? I have an A80J 65" as my 1st OLED and it's far beyond what I thought possible for a TV coming from a 10yo plasma. Brightness, detail and contract is amazing. Either of those options you have listed will be great TVs. I like the Sony particularly for longevity, they just seem really well made. I also use Kayo Sports a lot so this as well as Google TV was a factor for me.

If you know someone who works for CBA, you can get access to 20% of RRP through a purchase through Sony online store. I did this at the same time as the Sony $200 cashback offer and ended up getting the 65" TV for $3089. which is still a few hundred $ better than the listed specials. If you were to do this you may bridge that thousand dollar gap.

  • Would love to get the 77inch c1 unfortunately just can’t pull the trigger on such a high price, would anyone know of anything in the ball park of these 2 TVs at more bearable price point can’t get this across the line with the so

    • Also apologies for hijacking

I had the same dilemma as well a few weeks back for the 65inches but they were similarly priced.
LG is overall cheaper as they are the OEM of the OLED panels. However, I also don't game a lot and focused on 99% movies/shows. Deal breaker for me for the LG was:
    - WebOS doesn't have all the apps I need
    - DTS passthrough is not supported
    - Build quality is better on Sony with metal backplate. Might consider this for the 77in as OLED is thinner and plastic backing might be flimsy.
    - XR processor is better on video processing
