WTB - Cheap Laptop Deal - max $400

Hello All

Looking for a cheap laptop for my in-laws. Any brand is OK except Lenovo (their last notebook was Lenovo which gave them enough pain to boycott the brand)

Doesn't have to be a powerful laptop, any decent config with Win7 will be fine. Screen size preference: 13.3, 14 or 15.6

I was looking at few sites - the cheapest I can find is a Viewsonic ViewBook Pro VNB131 for $361 + Shipping. http://www.onlinecomputer.com.au/product_info.php?products_i…
It comes with the old C2D processor…

Can anybody please assist?

Thanks in advance

I have found that the quality and reliability differences between laptops comes down to model, more-so than brand; for example there was very likely other Lenovo brand laptops of a different model that would have given years of reliable service.

As long as you can find some reviews or testimonials for the model you are looking at, it should be OK.

$400 is a very cheap laptop, I wouldn't expect quality in this price range.

Try Ebay - you can get Asus laptops or Compaq for around $400. They are decent to work with, surf the net etc. They are NOT high end gaming laptops so for those of you who think about complaining, just don't. Any laptop these days is sufficient for what a computer was meant, namely work with (MS Office, the web etc.).

There is a Lenovo IdeaPad G575 for $359 + shipping (or none if you choose to pickup) from Orange IT.

    After cashback just $340

Pros: It's crazy cheap for a 15" laptop, with a fairly generous 500GB internal drive. It also has E-SATA.
Cons: The CPU is shockingly slow. It's actually a Netbook processor but they put it into a full 15 inch notebook. Expect netbook performance.

If that turns you off, then get this $429 Acer which comes with a more decent Intel B950 Sandy bridge CPU. Again, not a high performance laptop, but is already sufficient for most users out there.

    3rd option: refurbished notebooks.
Lenovo G560 i3-350m with 6 month warranty $360 shipped from Ebay.
Lenovo G560 Pentium P6100 with 6 month warranty $319 eBay.

Normally wouldn't touch them with a barge pole unless they came with a 12 month warranty, but at 6 months it's probably mildly acceptable. Buy at your own discretion.

Would you recommend the Dell Inspiron 15? Price starts from $449

The Acer I recommended has a 2x larger hard drive at 640GB, while the Dell Inspiron from the Dell website is 320GB at standard configuration.

It does have Bluetooth though, which the Acer lacks. You can't go wrong with either choice.
