New Swap n Go LPG bottles

Has anyone had issues with the new style Swap and Go bottles with the black tap? I got my Weber Q in June and I can’t screw one in all the way easily and without force, went back to Bunnings and they are all the same. Saw a little
Bit of info here:

Has anyone been able to get a new connector off Weber or a solution from Elgas? Just seems crap that this change has been rolled in by what appears to be the regulators without much warning and people are going to be caught out over summer

Are you sure Elgas haven't been bought out by Apple ?

Lol I wouldn’t be surprised if the bbq consortium was doing a swifty as well

Wait until you see the price of the new patented MFg connectors (that require a chip).

        That will confirm my suspicion…

        • An electrical chip on a gas bottle? What a combo!

@Guybrush57: No, it's a 5G chip that links to your booster shot.

            • @dizzle: Damn, here I was hoping I'd get 6G with my booster, or at least a faster GPU or something, 5G coverage is already amazing after the first two.

        • +1

          What? Like a potato chip?

  • Both those links say that it's just the same internal thread with different external, may require a bit more force due to additional sealing on internal thread.

    • I tried enough force and WD40 to be concerned, I was unsuccessful

      • Damaged threads on either the regulator or the bottle? It's a backwards compatible new valve, so should be no issue.

        • Shouldn’t be…have you had this experience yet though?

          • +1

@DemocracyManifest: Nope not as yet. I would check the threads on both visually just to be sure. Seems pretty dumb to change something that's worked just fine for ages.

              • @brad1-8tsi: Yeah I know, but how often was it an issue? Operating the old style ones wasn't exactly rocket surgery.

                • +1

@brendanm: You and I are both practical folk. Remember all those hopeless folk that we make money from?

Many years ago I had a friend spend 30 minutes trying to do righty-tighty on his gas bottle even though he undid it that way.

                  They walk among us.

                  • @brad1-8tsi:

I had a friend spend 30 minutes trying to do righty-tighty on his gas bottle

                    😂

                    They walk among us.

I suppose I would just rather people learnt how to do things, rather than attempt to make things idiot proof. All that happens from that, is that someone invents a better idiot.

                    • @brendanm: It's impossible to make something fool(idiot)proof, because fools(idiots) are so ingenious.

I had the same problem, i think i screwed it in properly and no gas came out, so I gave up and went back to Bunnings to have it changed. I still don't know how to get it to work if this is going to replace the old one.

    • Yeah I went back today and every single on in the cage was this new style, argh

  • +2

Hmmm.. interesting. I don't usually do a swap n go unless my gas bottle has expired. I usually get them refilled for $19.95 at Barbeques Galore. I couldn't find any cheaper option to get gas.

    • Yeah I got a gas bottle given to me, I wasn’t sure of it’s full history so swapped it and now I’m stuck with it 😂

      • +1

Oh.. bugger. I find that the swap n go ones are pretty new-ish. I have tried other gas swap places like my local mower place, which was cheaper but the bottles looked a bit dodgy and rusted. There should be dates are stamped on the bottle, I think the expiry is 10 years from the latest date on the bottle, so you can kinda tell when it was last tested or even how old it is based on how many dates there are on the bottle.

        • Yeah the Bunnings ones all have new slaps of paint and connectors, it’s just very weird when you cannot be certain if you get a new hose etc, it’ll work

          • +1

@DemocracyManifest: Thanks for the heads up. I had a look online, everyone is claiming the new valve is backwards compatible, seems like that is not the case. Was it that you were unable to screw it in or was it no gas came out? Apparently there is a new check valve to stop accidentally gas leakage.

@geek001: Hmm it suggests doing it anti clockwise, but I actually tried both ways haha. I think I’ll be contacting Weber about a new fitting…

              • @DemocracyManifest: I couldn’t get mine in the whole way and I turned it on and gas just leaked out of course…

              • @DemocracyManifest: It is a left hand thread, you have to screw it in anticlockwise.

              • -1

@DemocracyManifest: You don't need a new fitting. You need to screw it counterclockwise and screw it in properly. It 100% works with weber. I'm using one right now.

            • +1

@geek001: It is the case. I have one on my weber right now. It works just fine.

    • +1

Yeah that’s what I did the other day. Gotta say, when I was driving home with a big gas bottle in my boot, I was praying not to get rear ended!

And yes, you turn it anti clockwise

Anaconda do the same price, we run our house off two swap and goes heaps cheaper than renting big bottles and no waiting a week for replacements.
We save hundreds a year for minimal effort

      • Dunno what you pay for swap an goes and if you were waiting a week for deliveries you would have been better to go to a different supplier. Usually 45kg bottles work out cheaper than these.

        • Few things to consider here, we only use about 4 swap n go bottles of gas a year (family of 4, instant had hot water and cooktop)
When we used to have a single big bottle they up'd the yearly rent to a point where they cost almost as much as the gas we used. We didn't use enough to justify having 2 big ones so used to have a big and a little. That worked for a while.
Then the local depot changed the rules where I couldn't just drop the big bottles in for a swap, and cos we are a bit rural the wait was 3-7days.
Not good enough so figured out just filling up 2 small bottles a few times a year saved a bunch of rental and cancelled the big bottle.
The rent is the killer on the big ones if you don't use much.

    • Seems to be $23.85 now

I have one on my weber q right now - no problem at all. Got it from Bunnings last weekend.

    • I can’t screw mine all the way on: maybe I need to by multigrips - or do they not go all the way in now

      • -1

I just used my fingers, but I am totally ripped so there's that

  • It's just the american style external thread. that's coming here soon for the appliances themselves. much easier than the internal style threads.

  • +1

All of the new style connectors should have a black handle. They may have a green label as well.
There are plenty of suppliers out there that have a good mix in their cages, at the moment I'd be surprised if there was more than one or two new style connectors.
New appliances will have the new style connectors soon.
I work for a gas company.

    • Well that’s the odd thing this particular cage just happens to have all be changed over, and I assume the reason is because it’s the biggest Bunnings in the area and it’s on a highway/next to a motorway and they go through a lot of the stock quickly

      • +1

Maybe they got a new shipment in and just got lazy, haha. A quick shop around and you should find plenty of old style ones, but you shouldn't have a issue with the new styles anyway

  • swapped one a couple of months ago np

  • Did you get it to work?

    • Yeah, reverse screw in and I tightened it with multi grips, it works, but it doesn’t go all the way in. There’s no apparent leakage, it just seems really dodgy :/ and there’s not much documentation around to say whether you’ve done it right or not
