Amazon price match after purchase, or return/refund

Hi all.

Bought something last week from Amazon for $80.

Have now seen the same item for sale at Costco for &$60.

Does Amazon ever issue a credit note/refund the difference? What proof do they want? Do you have to go through chat?

Otherwise, do I just send it back to Amazon (do I pay for the postage?) and get the refund and go and buy it from Costco..?

Thanks

  • Otherwise, do I just send it back to Amazon (do I pay for the postage?)

When I tried to return an item recently they wanted me to go to a parcelpoint location to drop it off, but I don't live near one as I am in a regional area.
So they just said don't worry and refunded me. They didn't seem to think I could post it to them.

    • Refunded you ? in partial yeah ? or in full ? because refunding in full is kinda overkill of them

      • In full. Value was only 40 and I got to keep it.
I was happy to post it back but they would only accept it dropped off at a parcel point location, not sure why.

Wow weird, honestly but again if you are thinking from amazon's point of view its a pain to collect these returns pay for their shipping, labor for transporting in warehouse, or dumping (most often) as will almost always be cheaper to dump low value items for them, (Source https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1yqcagavfY Amazon Canada is pretty similar to Amazon AU )

  • I tried multiple times to get a credit when I bought from Amazon and the price at Amazon dropped a few days later. No dice. Had to buy the item again and return the second item as if it was the first one at my own cost! 😡

    • In my case the item hadn't even left Amazon and it was discounted to $15 from $35 I noticed the price drop within 2 hours of it being packed and was told "nope too late."
Their policy is "lowest price at time of order and packing. So if your order was for $35 and it increased to $40 you still only pay $35. If the item dropped to $15 even 1 min after it had been packed then nope it's too late."

  • Ah, own cost sucks!!

Depending on your reason, something like 'I am not satisfied with the product' don't need you to pay the postage. Obviously if you use it too much they will ban you.

Not satisfied with item. Immediately purchases again

Amazon used to give me promotional credit whenever I requested a refund after a bought item dropped in price. Many times they gave it, but recently, not so much and they've said I'll need to return the item and re-buy.

I've explained that the postage costs involved with them sending the newly re-bought item would be more than (often) the refund amount, and it's worked. But appears to be a hit and miss with agents.

In relation to other store price matching, even if raised to the attention of a chat agent, they won't price match and will wait for their algorithms etc to pick up the price drop. So in many cases, I just wait for Amazon to catch up to the other store's price - Costco however, may be a different case given membership requirements.

    • they certainly tightened up their $10 random sorry credit. Use to be so easy to get them.

  • Have tried a handful of times after seeing stories on here (some time ago I guess), but have never had any luck. Always been told to refund at my cost ($7 I believe) and re-purchase.

This was with things which have dropped in price on Amazon, not sure about price matching other retailers.

Yeah I had a similar experience where Amazon support said they couldn't refund the difference. I had to walk them through how stupid it is for me to return the item and buy it again, and they ended up refunding the difference, but still saying they don't normally do it and won't do it again. Stupid.

    • They want to make it a little bit hard so not everyone does it.

Returns on Amazon are super easy anyhow. You get refunded as soon as you drop it off at a parcel point location.

Easy IF you live near a parcelpoint - many who live in regional areas are nowhere near one.

  • I was going to ask this. Thank you everyone. I tried the chat. The person said NO. I will return and refund then.

  • I asked Amazon about this once and they ended up giving me promotional credit but only for the first time, after that they won't do it.

  • One time I bought the wrong phone case size, when I switched the colours I didn't notice the + disappeared. I wanted to return it using my own Auspost parcel bags which I had instead of their $7 return. The guy was nice enough to print me a free label so you could try that route.
