Cheap Laptop That Plays Minecraft - Budget $500

Hey guys. I’m out of touch now days and I’m looking for a windows laptop for a 10 year old that will play minecraft and do his homework etc.
I was thinking something like this as it has a 64bit cpu (full windows) and 8GB.

Budget is around $400-$500

Any better suggestions?

  • The screen is a bit small otherwise looks okay for a 10yr to start with and play Minecraft. You can always get a second screen for home usage.

Watch out with Minecraft as there are few different versions (Java V's Windows V's phone) and they are slightly different.

    • Yeah, that's when I got confused. People say it runs on a surface go 2, but these posts are from a long time ago and don't know if Minecraft has been updated since then.
maybe I can get away with the old work surface book I forgot about as it is i7 and 16GB.
I just need to reinstall windows to see what the specs are as I put this in a draw 2 years ago and can't remember.

My son has both the Windows and Java editions on his laptop. Minecraft does not consume very much resources.

The old laptop is the way to go. You should/will need to buy a "new"/replacement battery on ebay a the existing one should not work or not every well.

Minecraft does not consume very much resources.

Until you spawn hundreds of axolotls, llamas, and various other animals into a waterfall to ride. My Xbox gets very upset at that.

@brendanm: Yeah, Minecraft can be deceptively hard to run. I've decided to upgrade my i5 3xxx to an i7 because of Minecraft alone. At some point, your base will be populated with contraptions and farms, and it will be cpu intensive.

        • Actually, the battery is really good, that was why I bought it from work as I was going to get an inverter to use it when camping but I'd rather the kid have it; if it will suit. Unfortunately, the Microsoft warranty check site was wrong. It's only an i5 with 8GB of ram.

  • Maybe consider a higher speced older second hand/refurbished laptop?

Will likely outperform and outlast a cheap new one anyway.

It is a refurbished laptop OP was referencing. It's a 12.5" screen and sounds like an ex salesman / non techie type work laptop.

      • Whoops, totally missed it.
        Good point

Yep, thats exactly what it is a referb of some kind. Just looked at Amazon cause it had 180 day guarantee.
I just remembered I have a old Surface book. I looked up the serial and it says
Surface Book - 512GB i7 16GB with GPU, Warranty expired Nov 2017. Would that be any good?
No idea what the GPU is, I need to reinstall windows to check it.

    • From the looks of it (from my son using it) any GPU should do for minecraft and the Surface Book should work (except battery).

    • Yeah, your surface book is gonna be better than the one you linked.

  • Minecraft Bedrock Edition (the one on the Windows Store) runs heaps better than Java Edition. You don't need very powerful hardware to play either.

  • One last one they suggested.
    HP 14z-fq1000 5500U

Mums tossing up between my surface book and this one which is new. I kinda prefer this on now I realise mine is an i5\8GB because at least it is expandable.

    • US price.
