Nintendo Switch Add Ons?

Brains Trust, I have zero knowledge or experience with gaming, so I need some advice please:
The kids (13 & 15) are getting a Nintendo Switch (Neon, if that means anything?) for Christmas- what accessories will they need for Christmas morning?
Thanks 🙏

Games. That's pretty much it. Maybe some covers and screen protector but should be fine without for teens.

I'd recommend a glass screen protector anyway, the plastic screen scratches so easily.
Applying it straight out of the box to avoid dust and fingerprints getting stuck underneath it. It's difficult to clean it spotless otherwise.
Wouldn't bother with cover or skins.
As for other accessories, a Pro controller or another Joy-Con set would be great, especially if there's going to be multiplayer gaming

Edit: I purchased this one which has been great.
It's unclear whether you got the OLED or the original model (both have a Neon Joycons version). The screen protector linked is only for the original model

    • What are the “essential” games to start off with?
      Thanks

It's entirely subjective. Depends what they like to play and what other platforms they have. Can range from classic Mario/Zelda to Pokemon to Need for Speed to RPGs like Witcher 3. That's a question best asked to them directly.

As Hybroid said though, it's subjective.

At the moment I'm really enjoying Metroid Prime. Zelda is universally praised.

Can't go wrong with Mario Kart 8

If they're going to have a few joy cons, I could recommend the joy con charger which has been helpful when friends/family join in: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/joy-con-charging-station-…

Otherwise they should be fine. There's Skull n Co and Satisfye handheld grips (with carry cases etc) out there but I think that's more for adults with bigger hands and more portability purposes.

That's kinda expensive for what it is, $24 at big w

You can probably find them cheaper looking around.

Yeah I got them much cheaper for around $25 1-2 years ago. OP it's worth looking around for the best price on some of these accessories. :)

I'd recommend an extra set of Joycons - 'family' games go from being 2 player to 4 player. And worst case scenario, if one gets damaged, you have a spare to go on with.

I'd get a second set of joy cons and a decent size memory card. That's really all you need. Maybe a gift card for the eshop so they can get some more games.

    • What is the memory card used for, and how big do they need?
      Thanks

The memory card is used for storing games that you download online, i.e. games without a cartridge. It's also used for media storage (screenshots, video captures) among other things. All in all, it's certain that as you go on that the games will accumulate. Would be okay without a memory card if you only bought game cartridges but at some point you're going to run out of storage. It's not an immediate buy per say, but a good one to think about for future-proofing your console.

GET A PRO CONTROLLER or anything that is more comfy that the joy-cons.. even little kids hate the joy-cons if they've used ANY other gaming console.
You can usually get the power A controllers (corded) for under $30 often. Worth it for sure instead of extra joy-cons

I got an adaptor for my Xbox controllers cos the joy cons are rubbish.

Check out the 2 for $30 games at JB currently. They're not great "only" games, but there's a lot of fun to be had with games like Human: Fall Flat, Wargroove (if available) and Very Very Valet.

Otherwise I'd say you can't go wrong with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (there's a few Zelda games on Switch and this is THE game that most would talk about), Mario Kart 8, maybe Mario Party Superstars.

I'd also highly recommend for FUTURE use to familiarise yourself with www.dekudeals.com

That's where you'll be able to keep track of digital sales and occasionally cheap Amazon games when things work well.

    • Any idea when the 2 for $30 at JB ends?

      • It's been active for what feels like 6 months. They just change the games that are included every couple of weeks. It's a bit odd, but worth keeping an eye out for any that interest you.

        • Cheers. My son has been bugging me to get human fall flat. Might check out what else there is.
